What shall I be when I grow up?

On Monday, I go from being on maternity leave to being on displacement leave as my job was disappeared in July. I have NO idea where to start looking for a new job or even what I want to do. I do have 3 months at home on full pay to find something. Which is nice. This time I'd like to find something I love doing but have a horrible feeling I'll end up in another dingy office job.

just thought I'd have a public panic as my brain cells melt every time I think about it all

I'm not growing up for another 20 years or so. If you don't like office jobs (and neither do I!) is there anything else you could imagine doing with your background?

Does your old company not provide assistance - many will give careers counselling to redundant employees which can really hep you to find whta you are good at

do you know prufrocking, I now have a vague recollection that there was some kind of career-counslling service offered amongst the fistful of bumph I was handed months ago. I only found out my job was going 3 weeks before I went on ML so i didn't really take it all in.

I've just drifted my whole life, waiting for inspiration to strike. Now I'd really like to stay at home with DD but as I can't financially I want at least to find something a bit inspiring.

Teaching is the thing I keep coming back to in my head. But the training is such hard work I'm not sure I've gt the stamina.

Teacher training is hard work. The placements were especially hard with a little one around. You basically work all day in school and then have to work evenings and weekends to do the college work. I didn't make it, but then I was on my own with a 6 month old, and he got pretty ill so my mind wasn't really on it. He's fine now (and nearly 4) but he was poorly for a long time, so I really couldn't have continued.

BUT, that's my sad story. If it's something you want though, go for it! It's a career (and a career after just having a job can be pretty thrilling ) that pays pretty well, and depending on your subject and where abouts you are, you may even get a golden handshake after all the training!

Often if you cast your mind back to something you desperately wanted to do when you were little it can give you some ideas. If you wanted to be a vet try some voluntary work with animals, RSPCA or similar, for example.

see what voluntary jobs are on offer in your area there might be something that inspires you to retrain, and you can try before you buy so to speak
