Band 7 interview

Hi everyone, am I foolish to think of applying for a band 7 role after only 5 months at band 6? I’ve progressed fairly quickly from band ; to 6 but wondering if it’s too soon. Also any ideas on things to really consider to demonstrate my values and competency? Our interview questions are quite varied in terms of area at times but strong feeling I need to consider diversity and mentoring staff, managing team performance. Thank you for any advice or help.

Hello, I'm assuming you are NHS from the term 'Band 7', are you clinical/non clinical? It would probably be more common to move quickly through the bands in non clinical roles but either way if you meet the requirements and can demonstrate the competencies required then go for it - there's no 'set time' anyone needs to spend at each band, it's all about whether you are capable and ready for the next step. Even if you don't get it this time it can be a good experience to see the kind of questions you get asked at that level/what you need to do to get a B7 and shows your management you are keen to progress.

Again assuming this is NHS all the clues you need as to what you'll be asked at interview should be in the person specification - you are right that a key difference between Band 6 and 7 is usually the level of management you take on, so think about your experience of staff management/HR, finance/budget management, service and policy development, improvement projects and so on. Even if you haven't for instance been a line manager before you can think about what you've done that demonstrates the skills required such as giving constructive feedback, communication, prioritisation. Plus diversity/inclusion, IG, safeguarding, trust values are standard questions in most interviews so worth preparing answers to those plus of course the normal why you want the role, what you can offer, your strengths and weaknesses and so on. Good luck!

I would approach the appointing manager to discuss the role, this should give you a better idea if it’s the right time to apply. Maxelly has give some great advice too.

Hi both, I just wanted to say a big thank you for the replies and especially guidance Maxelly. I have submitted and expression of interest so will see what happens and if it’s not the right time, it’s not the right time. Smile
