Rejection call

How common is it to receive a call to let you know you have been rejected from a role? I assumed that generally a rejection is done by email but I have received a call this morning letting me know I was unsuccessful and they would keep me appraised of further opportunities that may arise.
I know nobody can tell me if they were genuine or not, but I got the feeling they did want to hire me and they genuinely may wish to employ me in another role and that's why I was called rather than emailed.

I've always been phoned with a rejection and no other offer forthcoming.

juneybean · 16/02/2022 15:45

I work in HR, I haven't got time to make rejection calls so I don't know whether to be impressed or not! But it does sound good they have took the time to do that!

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2022 15:45

I called someone who I wanted to connect with for future roles.

I wouldn't get hopes up though. The next role wasn't for absolutely ages.

Quangoquandry · 16/02/2022 15:51

Thanks, bit of a mixed bag then!

I'm pretty confident there will be something relatively soon - new company in a pretty niche space but we will wait and see.

This role has now been readvertised so they haven't filled it, although I recon a bitter client has put their foot down (over something, which is actually nothing, that happened more than 10 years ago) and that is the reason I didn't get it. The hiring manager seemed generally disappointed when she called.

NHS, I always call candidates both successful and unsuccessful as it gives them the opportunity to ask for feedback.

Themadcatparade · 17/02/2022 14:33

I had a rejection call yesterday (I knew and I think I half heartedly jeopardised the interview so no loss) and she stayed on the phone for 15 minutes going over my application and my strengths and weaknesses! I was very grateful for the advice

Cas112 · 17/02/2022 14:44

I've had one, one or twos times

That is great that they put so much in to giving you feedback. I emailed and asked for some on Tuesday night and haven't heard back yet, so maybe they're not so bothered about having me after all!

Did you have an interview or just submit an application?
I work in the NHS and we would always inform candidates who interviewed of the outcome via telephone. If it was an application you'd just get an email informing you or nothing

It was an actual interview, including presentation.

Interviewers really made me feel I had it in the bag (although I know it is never guaranteed) commenting "I liked your answer to this, your presentation included all the pertinent points we were going to ask you questions about" etc. so I really was quite surprised when that was the outcome of the call, especially as the salary was £2k less than my current which I knew going into the interview and was willing to take. Onwards and upwards I guess!

I phone anyone I interview to let them know. Food or bad. Seems like good manners really.

Yes I have had 4 NHS interviews recently, 2 successful and 2 not . They have all called me with the result.
ChessieFL · 18/02/2022 10:49

If I’ve had an interview I’ve always had a call telling me the result whether good or bad. As a hiring manager I also call everyone who has interviewed to tell them the outcome.

I’ve just applied for a NHS job, I reckon it’ll be stiff competition but I’m really hoping I at least get an interview.

I had an interview at the end of Jan for my dream job (not nhs) and I didn’t hear back AT ALL until I started chasing them, I sent 2 emails and I got back a very generic rejection email from the HR dept 2 WEEKS after the interview. I’m so put off now applying for any future jobs with this company because of that.

I applied for an NHS support worker job a few weeks ago. I am well over qualified for the role and the interview did not go too well but I didn't get it. Found out afterwards I was in the top 3 but they had interviewed 15 people for one post which i think is a little ridiculous. Interviewing again on monday for another of the same post and there are two posts this time so expecting it to be very competitive again.
desperatehousewife21 · 19/02/2022 08:27

Good luck in your interview @Babyroobs Smile it’s tough out there isn’t it?
I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much, the one I applied for doesn’t even close til 28th so won’t know for a while if I’ve got an interview. It’s an admin job but if I’m up against people already in the nhs I don’t think I’ll get it.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/02/2022 08:30

My organisation do rejection calls. I hate having to make them 😭 I think most people expect a call will be good news and you can hear the disappointment.

Rainydaize · 19/02/2022 08:34

I only make calls for both good and bad.

CatchingStars · 19/02/2022 20:12

I always call interviewees - successful and unsuccessful. If they've taken the time to apply and turn up for interview the least they should get is my time on the phone to let them know the outcome and feedback.

ThePlumVan · 20/02/2022 22:15

I always call them. I do the successful one first to ensure they accept it, then the non successful..
I get annoyed when the successful ask for time to think about it as it delays me getting back to the others.
I don’t offer feedback, but if they ask it’s usually a separate phone call so I can prepare properly, but I will always call them back.

I work in HR and it's company policy after a final stage for us to reject via phone . Earlier stages all e-mail
gogohm · 20/02/2022 22:31

I have received calls from non profits I applied to, I've also not been told even by email or letter without me chasing them for weeks!

It must be horrible having to make those calls as well as receiving them. I think I would rather receive a rejection by email as it's so hard to take these calls and try to chat when you just want to cry !
CJat10 · 20/02/2022 22:59

My worst interview experience was seeing a friend walk in as I sat in the waiting area. She rang later and told me she had the job. I received no notification from the interviewers. Civil service!!

CanorCanelloni · 20/02/2022 23:01

I normally don't hear back when it's a rejection Sad

Did you interview for a civil service job by any chance? Is it common to bring a presentation to the interview?
