Boss is leaving at work

… so means that the big boss job is up for grabs. I would apply if I didn’t know already that the leadership team don’t see me in that capacity and we have some young uns who I know will be in for a chance of the top spot. So I’m not best pleased I could have one of them as my new boss! I hope they go external frankly. My current boss is not perfect but she’s a bright lady and knocks the spots off the rest of us quite frankly. Anyone experienced peers coming your manager / esp maybe those who are 10-15 years younger?

They're definitely never going to see you in a leadership capacity if you don't apply! Get your application in!!

I’ve worked with bosses 20 years or so younger than me. I didn’t like it at all. Grandma and sucking eggs.

It’s one of the reasons l retired early.

Yes - and, no different from any other managers, they varied from being useless twerps, to tolerable, to great.

When you've worked a long time in your company you've seen it all before and grow resigned to the latest 'bright spark' reinventing the wheel. Just make the right noises and let them get on with it.

I agree with pps, worth throwing your hat into the ring if you'd actually like the job. You lose nothing and will get brownie points for being keen even if you don't get the role.

I agree with others, the leadership team will never see you in that capacity if you don't make a concerted effort to show that you're a serious contender (so a full arse application rather than a half arsed one).

However to answer your question, being managed by a previous peer who is younger than me made absolutely no difference to me. If they were previously an inept prat then that didn't change, I just knew to make sure nothing could slide of their shoulders to be blamed on me. If they were previously conscientious and decent then that didn't change either.

The dynamic has to shift slightly, but they have to get it right as the manager - not you.

Definitely apply! What's the worst that could happen?

Just to provide a view from the other side, I'm late 20s and a manager and I'm so so conscious of the age difference as the majority of my staff are older than me. I try really hard to provide them with what they need and let them get on with it but it can be challenging and I'm not sure how many of them are on side or who still see me as a kid, not competent etc.

It was be really nerve-wracking and a supportive team helps everyone. Just a thought!
