Will try not to drip feed. I'm a POC. Old man boss = sexist, Homophobic language, racist issues, Misogynistic tendencies. Issues with others but hasn't been pulled up on it in at least 5 years. I've been there 2. His boss knew about all the issues and still gave me the job putting me into a well known by everyone else situation.... I felt I had imposter syndrome so put up with a lot and obviously financially I can't just quit and also have been in lockdown for most of the last 2 years. So now after having had an issue that I decided was enough, it ended up going to boss's boss who had no idea apparently which I think isn't quite true and to HR. HR agree there's been harassment and bullying and want to figure out the next step. I could go informal but it would be a bad environment to work in either way and won't change old man boss as he's past retirement so very stuck in his ways.
It's a very well known workplace so if I go formal it could possibly go pear shaped for me but the issue really needs dealing with. I believe I have grounds for Formal as there's witnesses to some and evidence of others. But am I prepared for this? I am looking for another job but I need to do some online training to get to a better financial position and job.

Going to HR/complaining usually won't result in a better work environment for you.

You're better off looking for another job tbh.

If you do complain whether informally or formally about his misogyny etc I would however you stop with the ageism as that could be considered as serious. "old man" , "past retirement age" etc.
Really? Ageism? He's an old man who is past retirement age. That's fact. I'm not talking about a 25yo man or a 16yo boy.

I'm already trying but struggling. Plus do I leave this for the next person to deal with?

HR will look at the evidence and check to see whether his contract of employment has been contravened. There is usually a clause there about harassment etc not being tolerated. If he has not kept within his contract then HR may take action with or with you deciding what to do.

Remember HR are there to protect the company, not you.

I cannot stress enough - work out what you want. This will dictate how you progress…

At 2 years + For me personally I would be going informal route and working towards a payout.
So having Conversations without prejudice and looking to agree a settlement from them to leave for you to quietly depart with a good reference - you can agree the wording of this.
They can pay for your time to speak to an employment lawyer at the end and you can generally hope to get a pay out of up to 6 months (4 is a good result though) and up to 10k IIRC can be tax free.

Concurrently I’d be looking for a new job so ultimately you get 15k or so for his shitheadery and your troubles plus a shiny new job.

That would mean I could apply for a lesser paid job after paying off the car which is my biggest financial drain.

However, I have no idea where to go because the policy is unclear and HR are overwhelmed by the sweeping under the rug that's gone on. I thought I'd had an informal chat but now I think it was a chat and I have to make it an informal one if that makes sense?
People expect where I work to be amazing but the truth is its the opposite.

Plus I'm on certain benefits as a single parent. A payout would cause me issues even though it would help me iykwim.
