How much do you spend on commuting?

The company I work for has recently closed an office and as a result my place of work has moved to a different city. Train travel costs for me to get to work are now very high. My workplace have agreed to contribute to the increased cost, so I am trying to come up with a figure that is reasonable to help with negotiations.

I have been wfh since the start of covid so any travel cost feels like a hit as I’ve not had to spend anything on this for so long.

So my question is twofold - a) what do you consider to be a reasonable percentage of your salary for travel costs? and b)how much do you currently spend on your commute? (If that’s not too nosey!)

Thanks

Around £10 per day, but I also don't commute every day so could be anywhere from £20-£50 a week

No, sorry, between £5-£7 per day. If I travel in with DH it's £10 between us in petrol

Surely you'd suggest they meet the difference in full?

FWIW I paid about 10% of my take home. (Now wfh!) Earn £65k.

£350 a month - prob more now.

When our local hospital closed and the staff had to travel further to the next closest hospital they all got paid the difference in travel expenses, for a number of years

About £14 on the train per day plus £4 on the car park. Minimal petrol as it is only a couple of miles to the station.

50 quid a month. Tram.

When I was in the office a monthly travel card was £240. I’ve moved so a monthly travel card would now be £167 but I’m working from home. Is remote working not an option?

Thank you for all the replies so far.

Good (obvious 🤪) point on meeting the difference. It’s not completely straightforward as I have increased my hours and wfh some of the time, but will definitely include this as part of my negotiation.

I do work remotely half of the time, but need to visit the office a few times a week.

Pre covid £36/week for a weekly train ticket

About £120 a month for me. I only go to the office 3 days a week though.
