So I applied for a new job and was interviewed. They phoned me the week after and let me know I had the job if I accepted.

I accepted the job I gave them my references and everything else they wanted like passport for dbd etc. They wanted me to hand my notice in there and then. I hung fire and said I'll hand it in once all checks have gone through etc.

I got a reply from my 'new employer' that I could hand my notice in as all checks were done and if Id give her a start date. So I handed my notice in and gave her a date for me to start.

A week goes by after I've handed in my notice and she's emailed me asking me to chase my references...I'm quite baffled as shouldn't she be doing that and she told me all checks were done. I'm scared I'm going to be left without a job. Has anyone had similar or am I going to be okay? (Very dramatic I know) just I've worked in this job 9 years and leaving to do the same job just somewhere else!

Thanks guys x

Generally you wouldn't alert your current employer that you're looking for a new job by asking for references until after you've got the job offer. And yes, you wouldn't do it yourself. The new employer would do it.
Obviously you're going to have to phone the NE and clarify. I wouldn't worry too much though. I'm sure everything will be ok. Legally, any reference has to be honest and accurate .

I'm only worried about my past sickness record I was on sick a while ago with PTSD after childbirth and I'm scared this will flag up and I've already handed in my notice and I'm left without a job. I also feel pressured now as I don't feel I should have to chase them, if that makes sense x

Do you have your contract? Never hand your notice in without having the contract. Definitely wouldn’t do it at the reference stage.

CorrBlimeyGG · 01/02/2022 18:25

If your referees have not responded, it is a good idea for you to chase them yourself. Ultimately, if you need them before you start, you do what you can to get them completed.

Try not to panic, a lot of workplaces don’t give specific references any more, they will just confirm you were employed there from x date. I don’t think sick record would be a reason to withdraw a job offer.

I was given an email with hours I'll be working etc, if that's considered a contract. This is the only job I've had and the only one I'll be leaving and don't have a clue what I'm doing. I was asking the new place for guidance and she said all checks were done and it was okay for me to hand my notice in :( I feel stupid

No, you don't hand your notice in until you have a signed contract

BobbieT1999 · 01/02/2022 18:50

If you have signed a contract then you don't have one, the emails with hours aren't it.

Chase them hard for your contract.

Also, employers can't say anything negative when they give references so most places have a policy of saying "yes X worked here between dates Y and Z"

Shall I email her and mention a contract?

Sorry that was meant to say "if you haven't signed a contract then you don't have one"

And, yes, absolutely email them - don't be apologetic for doing so, ask them to send through the contract. If you haven't heard back by lunchtime follow it up with a phone call.

StCharlotte · 01/02/2022 19:17

Don't panic. I've never signed a contract before I've started a job (I'm not a footballer Grin) but I would chase up your references. You can explain your sickness record so I'm sure that will be fine too.

I have done this thank you!
