Has anyone done one of these for a job as part of interview process?

What are your thoughts on them?

Yes and think they are odd but serve a purpose, there is no way to fluke them.

My employer only employee a particular "type" of person, think cut-throat/workaholic types... that way they get maximum bang for their buck

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 27/01/2022 12:45

Do you think they can really reveal personality flaws? Like narcissism for example?

It is more about behaviours and reactions to situations than personality traits.

I’ve never had to do one as part of the job application process, but have done them a few times when already in a job. I think the idea was that if everyone in the team knew what our personality types were that we could work out how to work together better and be more productive. All it did however was confirm what we already knew, which was that the team was full of a particular personality type, which wasn’t the best for the kind of job we were supposed to be doing. That team was the best advert for psychometric testing I’ve ever seen!

Some claim they can detect personality traits at the recruitment stage. I'm not sure that I'm convinced.

Having been burned by a narcissist previously, my boss is suggesting we try using one the next time we recruit.

Narcissism is not a trait in itself, it is a group of traits/ behaviours.

A personality test will describe traits in a constructive way related to the work environment. It will not suggest a personality disorder!

I think you can fake a response can't you so don't assume 100% foolproof.

Exactly.

Depending on which tests you're referring to I think it would be very hard to fake it. MBTI for example - if I remember correctly it's quite long and it asks the same question (in slightly different ways) several times dotted throughout. You'd need to remember how you answered it 25 questions back in order to consistently fake it.

Load of pseudoscientific nonsense, especially Myers Briggs.
