Manager expecting me to work extra hours

user8760098 · 25/01/2022 19:36

I am contracted for 20 hours a week, due to my health I reduced my hours from 37 to 20 just over a year ago.
We are short staffed at work and staff have holidays booked to use before the end of the financial year meaning that we will be even more short.
My manager asked me to work extra hours and I explained I couldn't as I think it will affect my health. She was really shocked that I had told her no and told me that she needed me to work extra.
She is been really awkward now with my rota changing my shifts around and asking me to come in on my days off. She told me today I wasn't a team player for not working extra.
Can anyone give advice on how I should handle the situation?

How much notice is she giving you for shift changes ? What does your contract say?

It's good that you have a good work/life balance - don't feel pressured into changing that. She's allowed to ask you to work on your day off and you're allowed to refuse.

Out of interest - is she doing extra shifts? Or does she think she can just bully you into doing them .

What type of industry are you in

The rotes are done 2 weeks in advance but never done properly so 1-2 days before she will notice she doesn't have enough staff in and start changing things around. My contract states I think something along the lines of you will be required to work extra shifts as and when needed. She isn't doing extra as she works full time. I work in retail.

How is your 20 hours a week allocated? Is it 3 days a week?

Christ, I had one of those bosses, you have my sympathy.
Is it a lager larger retailer with HR ?
Of the hours were part of a reasonable adjustment because of your health you cant be compelled to work extra hours.

This technically means you have no real leg to stand on

Thats what I thought 😩 Although I'm not sure if its 100% worded that way I don't have a copy with me. It could be something along the lines of required to work when needed (as in whenever they want you to work your contracted hours if that makes sense).
