Can I appeal a decision regarding the option for a secondment?

I hope this makes sense.

I've seen an interesting job opportunity. I'm permanent but the other job is fixed term for one year in the same organisation. I have applied and having been told before by my current manager that the organisation is very pro professional development and secondments are offered all the time, when I've enquired about the chances of a secondment if successful I've been told no.

I know it boils down to business decisions, but the new role would equip me with skills, experience and knowledge that would massively benefit my current team.

Is there such a thing as appealing when a secondment is denied?

I'd say that there's no such thing as any kind of standard practice as all workplaces are different so only your HR department would know the answer.

That would very much be a case for your employer’s policies. There isn’t a law around this type of thing, unless you think there is a legal issue behind this (eg discrimination).

Things like secondments are typically according to business need - are you needed by your business and would your secondment bring real benefits back to your business.

Some places are happy to invest in development even if there is no tangible direct benefit to them, at least if not obvious in the short term, however equally a lot of places won’t.

Thank you both. I will speak with HR.
