Flexible working request appeal meeting

I requested to reduce my hours when I return from maternity leave in a few months time. My request was rejected just before Christmas and I now have an appeal meeting this week. Has anyone ever successfully won an appeal of this sort, and if so do you have any advice?
Quite a stressful situation so I'm trying to stay calm and leave emotion out of it.

Hey I know this might not help you but I went through an appeal meeting and unfortunately didn’t get the days or hours I was hoping for. However I did get slightly more offered than I was first offered. I hope it goes well for you.

What were theit reasons for rejectibg it? I would focus on your argument how what you're propoaing will work for the business and have counter arguments against their points. Remember it is about the business needs, not your personal reasons as such

Can you present them with more than one possible working pattern? The more flexibility you can show the more chance you can be accommodated. Offering to meet in the middle re. your total hours might also help.

Thank you all for replying. The meeting was very frustrating for me - apparently my role cannot be done part time at all. I went prepared to be very flexible but there's no flexibility at all from their end.

It sounds a bit like I was naive in what I asked for, but when I went on mat leave the role was slightly different and there were more people in the team who have subsequently left and not been replaced. So, I'm a bit stuck now and I wish they'd made it clear to me when I first mentioned I was intending to put in a request. That would have saved me a lot of time and stress.

I feel like I could've written this post myself! Feel free for you to PM me so I can tell you of my experience

Job share?

Thiswayorthatway · 20/01/2022 20:40

What’s your job?

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/01/2022 20:40

The onus is on you to come up with business reasons and solutions to demonstrate how your role can in fact be done part time.

Are there any other similar roles being done part time that you can use as an example.

Think of all of the advantages to them on you returning part time.
Think of all the reasons that they have as to why they don't think it can be part time and then come up with solutions.

I'm sorry @TH22 that you've faced a similar situation.

I proposed a job share but the job market is awful, apparently. I've given counter proposals to my original request, but they've told me my job role is needed 5 days a week. I tried to show how it could work for the business but I feel like they weren't prepared to listen!

My job is not particularly important - I'm a copywriter Confused
There is a silver lining in that they're prepared to look into other roles that might work for us both. So, my fingers are tightly crossed that I can sort something out and then have a less stressful last few months of leave.
