Hi all,

I'll be moving to a different part of the country this summer with my DH and our 2.5y DS. We're moving to be closer to my family and so we can afford to buy a house/general lifestyle reasons. DH is a teacher, so can work literally anywhere. He will be the main wage earner.

I currently work 3 days a week in the heritage sector, my take home is about £18k before tax. I've got 10 years experience in what I do and I love it (though don't love current workplace), but it's a role that exists less and less the further from London you go.

I need to work to contribute to our income and p towards bills. I don't really want to commute any more (done it for 15 years, I'm tired). I don't see myself in a very commercial or profit driven setting. I'm a skilled administrator, have logistics skills, project management (nothing formal), a very small amount of legal and insurance knowledge.

The problem is I just don't know where to start. There is very little heritage sector employment where we're going, but I don't know what sector I could work in. What kind of jobs could I do? Job sites just seem full of adverts for carers and sales people.

Thanks.

What’s your highest level of academic / professional qualification?

The new board for mature study and retraining may give you some ideas, even if you’re not currently considering retraining. It might be a good idea though, for both refreshing your skills and establishing new work contacts.

Thanks @LiterallyKnowsBest - I've got a humanities/history based bachelors degree, and a heritage masters. It's a bit niche!

Would there be similiar roles at local council historical sites/national trust/local forestry/museum/art gallery type companies?

That’s … middling niche!

Suppose your next move depends on whether you’re involved in the material preservation of properties or more on the public engagement end. I guess if your work requires tangible objects you need to be where they are, but on the other hand, I have no idea who designs the countless educational resources on heritage that seem to be on, say, every theatre website. Presumably those people do everything online. Or … heritage specialists who run workshops in schools?

Lots of interesting stuff going on at the intersection of history and science …
