New job dilemma

I’m currently 2 months into a 12 month fixed term contract. The salary is £5,000 lower than my last role, it’s 9-5 with no flexibility but it’s not demanding as of yet. I’ve just been offered my dream role but it’s self employed and I’ll need to find my own clients which is going to hard & take time. They will provide training to do this and it is a very well known company. The role will allow me to earn twice as much eventually if not more. I just don’t know what to do.

A good way to deal with this is do a pros and cons list. Personally I feel you should take the self employment option as you may live to regret if you don't but I don't know your situation x

I don't understand how you can be offered a role that is self-employed and will require you to find your own clients. Surely that's a role that you just do, rather than be offered? What are they actually offering you if it's not employment or clients?

LadyWithLapdog · 16/01/2022 00:47

New job sounds risky. Won't there be other dreams jobs? Why did you move from your previous job if you're paid £5k less?

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/01/2022 01:03

If you’re being offered a ‘role’, how is it self employed? Do you get a basic salary?

That apart, do a list of pros and cons as PP said. You don’t sound like you like your current job much though. And 12 months isn’t long term security.

Lolabray · 16/01/2022 09:11

I agree a pros and cons list.. also self employment is ok but you have to think of the bills and make sure you have the money if these aren’t covered if you have no clients initially. Follow your dreams x

It’s an advisory role so regulated so you need to work under a company to do it, you can’t just do it on your own. They are offering training and mentoring too so that I don’t fail. I took the role on a lower salary as it’s only temporary, I was working part time and in a different industry so saw it as a chance to get more experience in the industry I want to be in.

The main thing I would be considering is how reliable is the work from the new job. If you have to find your own clients, how easy is that, how steady is the demand for what you will be doing, and will you (presumably less experienced) be easily able to compete with more experienced people doing the same. It's great that they will provide training and mentoring, but you need to have an income you can depend on.
Do you have any savings to fall back on or perhaps a DP or other family who can support you financially while you get started?
I'm very much in favour of going for the dream role, you need to be able to enjoy work, and life. But just make sure you have a plan for a gap in earnings while you train and get started.

Hoppinggreen · 16/01/2022 18:39

Sorry but I have ads offering similar and they are dodgy as fuck.
Even if it’s legit it’s a majorly selling role and you shouldn’t underestimate how hard it is to get clients. You can be as regulated and trained as anything but without plenty of clients it’s pointless and any future earnings are not guaranteed
Sorry to piss on your chips OP but unless you have lots of savings, really good selling and networking skills and a huge amount of resilience please don’t leave an actual job to do this

user1493494961 · 16/01/2022 18:41

It doesn't sound much of a dream job.

Mrmoose23 · 16/01/2022 19:21

Thanks for all your advice, it’s helped me come to a decision. I don’t think it’s dodgy but I think the comment about not underestimating how hard it will be to get clients is why I am unsure. I think I will keep looking for now to see if I can find something with at least some clients provided.

Good luck! I think you have time to keep looking but well done for being brave and considering a big change.
