Significant changes to role

I've been told that my role is planned to significantly change. Half my portfolio is being moved somewhere else - it's the most significant, stretching and important work area I look after. The responsibility I'd be left with is not commensurate with my seniority and not comparable in responsibility to others working at my level. When I asked what would be replacing it I got vague mutterings of "shaping a new role" without any indication what that means.

Other roles at my level are also being changed, but they are both being given better opportunities because of the changes (neither of them are inheriting my work).

Does anyone have any advice on how I should handle this? I'm not really sure what questions I should ask, where I stand, if I should be going to the Union on this. Many thanks.

I don't know but I'm in a similar position (all the "senior" stuff I do within my role has evaporated to others and I'm left doing a much lesser job than others at the same level).

I've raised it with my manager and got vague promises but nothing tangible. I'm now looking for another job.

Will you be on the same pay?

Not because it is right but your employer has decided to take your important responsibility off you, it's time to start job hunting. Of course you can stay and fight but you won't win this battle. It may just be your line manager who doesn't like you but I bet your employment contract allows for it.

I would book a meeting with your manager to understand why this is happening and give yourself a chance to defend it but they are unlikely to change their mind. Make sure you document the meeting and send an email after.
