DD (21) works for a charity focused on empowering women economically.
She took a gap year 2021 from uni but was working in a finance firm as an intern she hated the environment due to bullying
She moved to London for this woman’s charity it’s a policy co-ordinator role dream career, she was originally offered a 6 month contract to cover illness, dd persuaded to offer 1 year they agreed
In December after passing probation in September (started June) she was told she would need to leave end of jan
Dd queried never had an answer she returned and stated she was offered one year contract, they claim the hr assistant made a mistake

They also persuaded dd to return to uni she was told they would support her (they didn’t) dd is at Sussex uni and lives in London travelling for work and uni occasionally. She is stuck paying rent unable to now pay after this month (I can’t help her)

She started applying last month rejections so far

Any wisdom helpful

Even if anyone knows of any jobs related that is for entry level, as most claim to be but aren’t

What did her contract say about the duration and notice?

PinkHoops · 15/01/2022 20:35

Contract stated 3 years, 4 week notice period

Unfortunately she has less than two years service, so has few rights beyond notice. Employers are free to promise a great deal and then take it away on a whim.

We suspected, its causing a lot of stress I’m angry on her behalf

So she's been given her one months notice? Sounds about right. Can she give notice on her accommodation? These things do happen. It's harsh but they can terminate a contract by giving due notice

Unfortunately in the charity sector many roles are dependant on external funding streams. They may have hoped to get further funding to continue it only to be competing against many other charities for the same pot and losing out. Is she claiming uc? Is she continuing the course, can the uni help if so?

I think it’s more annoying she passed probation which was a condition

Can’t access SFE due to working full time I think honesty would have been nice, instead of telling her it was 3 years Can’t access UC due to uni

What do you mean by can't access SFE due to working full time? As I understand it you absolutely still can get student loans?

Short term in London she should get a retail or hospitality job, while applying for something she actually wants to do. It might take her a few moths to get something she likes but she should be able to get a lower paid job virtually overnight

The income goes on household for SFE our wages combined she wouldn’t get much SFE advised.

Hospitality wouldn’t cover her rent

@PinkHoops I live in central London, how much is her rent???? Places are desperate for people at the moment she should be able to get 9-11 pounds an hour. With a student overdraft too she should be able to make ends meet for 2-3 months until she gets a new role.

Unfortunately policy roles for people without degrees are a pretty hard shout.

Also has mobility issues, so can’t do waitressing
Not sure how full time retail would fit with uni

Not sure how any ft role fits in with uni, especially so far between. What about theatre foh roles, box office etc.

An office job isn’t physically tiring like retail etc is, she has a low immune system so picks up coughs colds easily which occurs in retail more. Her grades have all been 1sts so far
