Is this bullying?

My daughter works in retail in a small team of 4. Recently there has been a lot of staff leaving.
Two of her colleagues constantly moan about how bad the place is and how they are looking for other jobs because of this. They constantly tell my daughter that she will be left to do all the work because there will be no staff trained to do it but her and laugh.
My daughter struggles with anxiety and panic attacks after been diagnosed with an illness during lockdown 1. She constantly worries about something bad happening and this is making her even worse worrying about been overwhelmed at work.

Difficult to say, sounds more like work banter but she is on the end of it. Are they the ones leaving?

They are not officially leaving, just applying for jobs at the moment.

I don't like the term banter (often used to excuse bullying), but in this case it sounds like they are not making this comment to upset her or make her anxious.

Does your daughter wish to continue working there?

yes she like working there and her hours suit her, when she went back after her illness she asked for reasonable adjustments to finish early as she struggles with fatigue in the afternoon and her manager has let her do that for the past year so it works well. I think if her hours were changed she might consider looking for another job then.

Without being there to hear how it's being said I don't know that it's bullying, it sounds more like they're just stating the facts. I have diagnosed anxiety myself though and I can understand her worrying.

The last company I worked for before leaving to start up on my own was awful, big company in the UK but they treat their staff absolutely awful. Their turnover of staff was ridiculous, every time new people were hired but it would take ages for the management to actually put them through training and instead of doing it quicker it was all left to the colleagues that knew what they were doing, regardless of it meaning they were overworked.

The laugh at the ends a bit odd but it could be more then warning her so she would be aswell looking for new jobs too

No, this isn't bullying. Why so you think it is?

How is this bullying?

Its up to the manager to sort this out. Would she speak to the manager and say she is worried about everyone leaving. If i were her I would be looking for another job if she finds it difficult working there. People moaning about their job constantly brings everyone down.

This is not bullying

Winniemarysarah · 10/01/2022 16:38

Of course it’s not bullying. How old is your daughter? I think you need to point out that she can’t be forced to do the work of any staff that leaves. If she becomes unhappy in her job then she can leave herself.

iklboo · 10/01/2022 16:42

It's not bullying, I think your DD may be catastrophising, which is understandable if she has anxiety. Does she have a counsellor she can speak to?

eagerlywaitingfor · 10/01/2022 16:53

It does sound like low-level bullying to me. The other staff members repeatedly go on about it, and keep laughing. They are probably well aware of the effect it has on your DD when they do it. Not nice.

That's not bullying.
