Basically I’m looking to do part time work from home for the time being due to health reasons.

I’m a good typist, but don’t have secretarial qualifications.
Do I need this for transcription work? Does anyone know? Or if you are currently doing transcription work from home can you tell me a bit about your background/qualifications please.

Anyone doing something similar?

I've done transcription work at home and it's ok as long as you have the time to concentrate. I've also done board clerking work for local government and schools, a little more than typing involved but pays well and mostly home based.

I would have thought you’d need level 2 at least if applying for work from home or they may get you to do a test online?

ChakaFridaMendips · 16/01/2022 09:33

When I started at temp agencies (admin or PA type roles) they’d do a copy typing test on speed and accuracy or how to format a letter; and they’d do Word and Excel tests (like a computer game version of Word) to show if you knew how to copy and paste, find, compare, basic formulas etc.

They never seemed interested in secretarial qualifications.

@drybird I’ve seen a course for transcription training so I’m thinking it will probably help when looking for work.

Can you say a little more about the board clerking work please, that sounds interesting. What’s a typical day?
Thank you.

@ChakaFridaMendips, I was thinking about joining an Agency but now going to look into hospital health banks. Not sure if they’d have a lot of opportunities working from home for typists.
That’s handy to know about the tests, thank you.

Board clerking is like a PA /secretary role but for a board of governors or non executive board so the majority of the work is done remotely with 1-2 meetings per month or quarter depending on the company. All schools have governing body's and they employ a clerk to be the organiser of the meetings / minutes / project management and so on.. your role is to keep track of their actions and ensure they are completed, documented and to the law of the board. It's an interesting role and a great stepping stone into board roles. Not just within schools, almost all companies have a board of directors a little research should help you find the right fit for you.

Look online. Do some research.

Thank you @drybird that’s really helpful and informative. This is definitely something I am going to follow up. It does sound like a interesting role.

I did it a few years ago. They give you an online test and wanted you to have a foot pedal and certain standard of headphones. I am an audio typist so had the equipment anyway. But the two companies I was with were awful. They'd give you audio you couldn't start and stop or really difficult to hear stuff that you had to repeatedly listen to. It wasn't worth it in the end. But on here somewhere is the earn £10 a day thread where they recommend companies to work with. It might be under credit crunch.
