Maternity pay confusion

Hello.

Hopefully this won't sound a bit stupid but I'm so confused with working out what maternity pay I would be entitled to.

I work part time and also have a small business (Etsy sales), would I still be eligible for statutory maternity pay or would I be classed as self employed? I do tend to earn more through my small business but this isn't consistent pay unlike my part time job.

Hopefully someone can help me with this!!! Thank you!!

You cant get both SMP and Maternity Allowance so you'd claim one or another. Do you meet the earnings threshold for SMP from your part time job? As far as I know if you claim SMP you could still do your self employed work without affecting your maternity pay.

@dementedpixie

Thank you for replying.
I understand it wouldn't be both just hoping it would be statutory instead of maternity allowance!

Yes I meet all the requirements for statutory but just concerned that I'm somehow 'cheating' the system as I also have another income. X

maternityaction.org.uk/advice/rights-for-parents-with-more-than-one-job/ This is really helpful.

It will depend on whether you qualify for SMP through your first job, or whether you claim Maternity allowance for both. You can't have SMP and Maternity Allowance.

@jamontoastx self-employed income won't affect your SMP at all.

@Lougle

Thank you so much, perfect x

If you had two jobs with different employers then you could have got SMP from both if you met all the requirements. You arent cheating the system by working on a self employed basis while on SMP
