Civil Service question - transfer of continuous service / maternity leave

Asking on behalf of DSis who isn't on MN (hence the NC - going to send her the link to this thread).

She currently works for a department of the Civil Service and has worked there long enough to accrue the enhanced maternity package. She is about to TTC, but is considering a move to a different department - think the equivalent of DWP to HMRC. She doesn't want to do this if her continuous service (and thus right to enhanced maternity) will restart. She can't find a clear answer online and she doesn't want to alert her (tricky, grumpy) boss - she applied for something 18 months ago, let him know in advance, and he got really cross with her, for nothing (she didn't get the role). For the same reason she doesn't want to apply (and ask the question later), wasting everyone's time, if she can't transfer her continuous service.

Is there anyone who works for the Civil Service who might know the answer please?

In the same vein - is there anything that auto-alerts line managers when you apply for jobs? She doesn't want to tell him at the point of application in case he's funny with her again; she'd rather tell him if, e.g. she got an interview / short listed etc.

Thank you so much to anyone who can help Flowers

I know it counts as continuous service for pension, as I did a similar move 18mths ago.

She needs to find out if she'd be going over on the same T&Cs. Some departments have "modernised" pay (removal of increments and narrowing of paybands) which are essentially new contracts with differences in the sick pay, mat leave available etc.

I think it would be a continuous process, however her best bet would actually be to speak to HR in both agencies, as her line manager may not even hold the knowledge.

Hiya lovely,

It wouldn't affect her continuous service. For mat leave her service length starts from her first day in the civil service regardless of department.
Ask her to contact HR to clarify, she can contact them without her grumpy manager knowing

I concur with @Jmal it starts from day 1 of working from civil service. She needs to ensure that her correct date of commencement is reflected in her current ts and cs

Just to add managers don’t get auto notification of job applications through CS jobs. The only notification they get is when the user registers as a civil servant and they confirm (this is only on registration for the site and not for each vacancy)

Classicblunder · 01/01/2022 09:19

It is fine, I have done it twice - but suggest she speaks to HR to confirm.

Thank you all very much - DSis says thank you too! Cake Flowers
