Do you finish your office based desk job on time?

Are you able to log off on time and get to 'Not work' on bank holidays and weekends? If yes, what do you do?

I have come to the end of my thether with my work. I get annual leave plus bank holidays. But the work is very much driven by deadlines... so I end up working on days off. Feeling particularly bitter at the moment because I had to work both Bank holidays because of additional work as a result of 2 people not doing what they should be and fucking off on holidays.

No, it always runs over even if I start at 6am and I rarely get chance to snatch even 20 mins for lunch. I'm junior civil service. I do get to WFH though so it's not all bad but I think if I was office based the start and finish would be clearer.

I started with CS during covid and am working in a new project so I'm not sure what expectations are, my boss says we shouldn't have to be working all these hours but we are understaffed and she does the same.

@OddBoots do you claim back via flex?

isitthestew · 03/01/2022 23:30

Yes unless I've been extremely inefficient. There are all sorts of cultural nudges that make people feel bad about working sensible hours. Don't do it. Unless you're partner/board level, if you can't clock off it means they need to hire more people.

No, that's never been offered as an option and there wouldn't be time anyway, we are a team of 2 and we each bob in to support each other even while on annual leave.

Today it has been mentioned that we might be able to claim overtime as they just can't recruit anyone to help internally as EOI as every other part of the branch is short too and an external appointment will take 3 months.

Yes, I work in admin/payroll for a construction company.

(I am posting now as boss has put her foot down and we are each taking a min 30min lunch break from now own, mine is 13:30-14:00 today)

@OddBoots I'm shocked you're working with the CS and they don't have flexi (considering youre working more hours than you're being paid for) please don't let them take advantage of you. I assure you there are plenty of other roles in the CS that will give you flexi time, considering our uncompetitive pay I wouldn't work without it.

@OddBoots I'm glad your boss has put their foot down!

Lacedwithgrace · 04/01/2022 15:25

Yes, sometimes I finish early if everything is done. I log off, leave my work phone on my desk and close the office door. It's difficult but anything that comes in after 4pm can wait until the next morning

No i dont. I dont really need to work over as my work is up to date, i work hard when needed and do non important jobs when not busy.

But i dont work overtime as i would never get paid for it. You are no better thought of for working loads of overtime or for never having a sick day.

If you were asked to work longer days for say a month whilst a new person was being trained up then yes you would be thought of as a team player but if you were working 2 - 3 hours everyday for months/years because you are so snowed under then it becomes expected of you and any good thoughts of you being a team player are long gone.

If you dropped dead tomorrow there wouldnt be any time for mourning you, the company would have your job listed on indeed within an hour of hearing the news of your death.

I tend to start early and finish early but never later than my actual finish time as I have commitments outside. There are some points in the year where I do need to work longer but I am always able to reclaim. My manager is also pretty decent about flexibility

I finish on time and don’t work on days off with very occasional exceptions. DH works all hours, weekends and on holidays.

He gets paid over 10x what I get paid so it’s understandable. Although still annoying.

So I guess the obvious question is OP: do you get paid well? Is it enough to justify the hours? If you want to reduce your hours would you be willing to take a pay cut?

If your job isn’t well paid and you’re still working all hours then definitely time for a change.
