Is 50 too old to get promoted to senior management

I don't look my age ( blessed with genes that make me 10 years younger ) but a few male friends whispered quietly in my ear that although - it's not fair? but it's true, that women just don't get promoted at 50 + so go for it now, before I look my age. At 50 they re considered past it ! I'm planning to apply for senior roles after 20 years part time in tech ... any tips ? Thoughts ?

What do you mean by senior roles, OP? Director? VP? Higher?

@lomoloko "I don't think many of the commenters here work in tech..."

Why do you say that? Serious assumption made there. Do women in tech not want to join mumsnet? I think you'd be surprised. I'll take that one step further - I work in tech, loved playing when barbie dolls when I was a little girl, love make up, love all things deemed 'feminine, light and fluffy' and I am pretty damn good at my tech job too. Take your generalisations elsewhere.

I said it because of the comments above like "I don't work in tech.
I expect this is industry dependent, but in my line of work, experience is valued."

(That is not a criticism of the woman who posted that.) Tech is particularly ageist. There are many studies on this. I linked one in my first reply.

Your comment, especially all the mad stuff about Barbies, has got nothing to do with me or what I posted.

Clearly, I also am a woman in tech.

I work in tech and think this is bollocks. I see plenty of women in their 50s getting promoted.

Too old, too young, too pretty, too ugly...women are always too something.

Stop listening to these circle jerks who neg you.

Too fertile. I thought it's was the 30-40s people were terrified of giving jobs too in case they had the temerity to get pregnant. I found people were more willing to hire/promote me once I hit 40 and had early finished having children. 50s there no chance of any accidents too, bonus!

I am paid by the government so can't speak for businesses but in my role I regularly interview others. Age has no bearing on whether someone is shortlisted or offered a job. Only their experience, qualifications and suitability for the role. It's probably against the law to discriminate on age grounds or should be. I recently got a senior promotion myself at well over the age of 50.

I once got 'didn't show enough partnership working' when all I did was partnership working, and was the only project delivering on partnership working.

Men will say anything to fuck you up. Best to tune them out. What they usually mean is that they are taking your strength and trying to pretend that you aren't doing it well.

Great advice there.

Thank you for the comments. I didn't go for it previously as I was in a verbally abusive relationship and my confidence took a huge hit. Obv I can't say that in an interview. However feedback from colleagues has woken me up to how much experience I have, how much they enjoy working with me which was took me a while to really believe. Im now reflecting on what an idiot I am not to have put myself forward before now. I got made redundant and was forced into the job market and interviews for the first time in 15 years. I got 5 interviews, 2 job offers and was in the stage 2 interviews for the other 3. I ve been promoted twice in the last 4 years. I just needed to heal myself first. I have... so next steps ..
