New job pay etiquette?

I have just got a new job I'm really happy about. It's public sector so a transfer on the pay scale as far as remuneration goes. I gave the new employer my current band information when I was recruited and they have offered me the same.

I now discovered that since my interview I have gone up a pay band in my current job (this was due but I wasn't expecting it as I had already given notice). I haven't actually signed my new contract yet... So would it be really cheeky to ask the new job to match this? Or since I really want the new job should I just suck it up - the difference is about £2000 a year...

Ask you never know. But since you gave notice l assume it wouldn't have applied to you on the basis of that. Definitely ask though 2000 is a lot of money to just shrug off.

Not cheeky

I recently changed to another LA, my scale went up unexpectedly in the original job. Unfortunately the new job couldn't match it as they had to pay what was listed as the pay on the job ad. But they compromised by putting me at the highest pay point within the scale bracket. So it was still less less but not by much, though of course it won't increase year on year but gives me time to explore if there's a chance the role could be adapted to fit the higher scale. Will see.

Definitely worth asking.
