Can anyone advise on Data Entry jobs working from home

Currently a SAHM. One child at school and youngest is one and a half and home with me. I’m thinking about starting youngest at nursery next year, maybe 2-3 days per week.

I really want to work from home for a couple years (single parent, no family around) just whilst I sort myself and plan for our futures.

I’ve been looking to see which types of jobs can be done working from home. I’m thinking about data entry but I don’t have any experience in this. My working background is mainly care work, nursing and some nurse management but I hope maybe some transferable skills.

Are there courses I should be looking to undertake? I’m ok with spreadsheets.
Any ideas on which types of data entry jobs suitable for first job and working from home?

Does data entry still exist as a job? I did data entry many years ago - taking physical files/forms and entering the data onto the computer. I worked for a university and also for a medical research facility. The jobs that I did 20 years ago wouldn’t exist today as the data would already be captured electronically. Also I wonder how easy it would be to work from home - how do you get the physical files home and would there be security issues with having the files offsite.

That said, with your care/nursing experience you might think about admin roles in medical fields. Good luck.

I also don’t think such jobs really exist!

What about medical transcription?

Data entry is still a thing, at least it is in the department I work in, but it involves taking raw data, stripping out the machine language and then entering the useful stuff into spreadsheets. It's not a particularly difficult job but you do need to have some understanding of computer jargon and a sharp eye to know which bits to remove and which to keep.

What about some form of customer service? I would imagine that with your experience you'd have plenty of transferable people skills.

Data entry still goes on a lot. Book keeping wise all the AI apps I've ever used are only just reliable, make mistakes, can't read the data, so need checking.

Well I have worked in financial services, in finance departments for nearly thirty years and have never come across an organisation that employers people to do “data entry” and I have dealt with a lot of data in my time. Sending the data off to a separate department / person just for “data entry” makes no sense whatsoever, would be a disjointed process. I have only come across data entry as a joke position in sitcoms. 😊

My husband works in a technical (a bit like actuarial) job and they send large quantities of data off for “data cleansing”. Whilst it looks fairly mind numbing, I do think it would require some technical and specialist business knowledge to do it though.

I think I need to make a decision on this. Lately I’ve seen quite a few data entry jobs advertised so was thinking maybe this is something to could train towards and work in for a year or two.

I was looking to move away from healthcare to be honest but could probably do something like medical transcription work. I’ve seen a couple very short courses but I think you might need a secretarial background before registering with Agencies.

Maybe I should explore some type of advisory post and use my skills.

Ideally I would like to be working from home just whilst I get the children, elderly mother and myself sorted.

I know of few friends who do medical transcription but it's not a wfh job for them. Also my company still has people for data entry but jobs are in far East.

This is a great YouTube Channel. It’s called Single Mum Entrpreneur but it’s not all about starting your own business.

She posts a ton of videos about jobs you can do from home and how you sign up for them.

I'm not clear if you are a qualified nurse but if so, you possibly could find employment with some pharma companies doing case processing in drug safety (pharmacovigilance) or perhaps clinical trial work where there is a degree of data entry required or other activities that can be done at home. If you are a nurse and understand medical lingo, this may be a feasible and not badly paid option.

@Lovelemondrizzlecake If you’ve seen suitable data entry roles with WFH then go for it.

seventyminutes · 07/01/2022 11:38

If you have a nursing background what about applying that knowledge and getting in to some medical coding work?
