How do I go about getting Job in M&S or Tescos?

Right - work in an investment bank and am fed up with it - fed up with getting the kids to childcare in the morning and paying so much for it - fed up with the train journey and the complete bastards who insist on listening to loud music on the train and ruining the only peaceful bit of my day and paying such a huge amount for the bloody priveledge too!

So have decided to change my life - I went for a job interview yesterday for an evening position - they want blood though - they really really do - said was I prepared to be flexible in terms of hours - er no not when the job finishes at midnight and is going to take me over an our to get home - I just can't be arsed with the rat race anymore!

So have decided that I want to go and work in M&S or Tesco - I could do 3 afternoons/evenings and earn more money that I am working in the city - I just can;t seem to find any jobs out there - M&S never have any on there website and Tesco seem never to advertise positions - please someone tell me the trick to get into working for one of these companies - give me that push to change my life!

Go into your local branch and ask?

Twinkie1 · 19/12/2007 11:58

Oh now I feel stupid - is it that easy then - just get scared that they will shrug me off when I so want to hand in my notice and start living and having more to do with the kids and less to do with my colleagues!

I would go into their local branch and ask for tescos. For M&S, you can phone a recruitment number (it's on the website I think) and do an automated telephone interview. if you get through that you get to speak to a person, and I guess if there's no local vacancies they could probably put your name on file for when one comes up? I have a feeling that's what they did with me when I got a part time job there ages ago. Can highly recomend working at M&S - super cheap food at end of day and nice working environment!

The money will be less than I am getting here but my train fare is £3k a year and going up and if I just worked afternoons and evenings it would mean that the amount I pay for childcare is so much less than what I am paying at the moment as it would mean just afternoons will have to be covered as DH finishes early enough to pick up the kids.

I am just wholly fed up with earning a good salary and seeing hardly anything from it at the end of the day - after I have paid everything I am left with about £50 a week which when I leave the house at 7.30 and get back in at 6.30 is just a joke!

Right will ring M&S and see what comes of that and will pop into Tescos inthe new year and see if there is anything going there!

Thank you guys - am looking at 2008 as the year that I go back to being more of a mum and less of a corporate dogs body!

You may find there is a regional office based at a local large store which may open up other possibilities or a distribution centre. In store staff are usually taken on at store level by the HR manager. You could phone and ask to speak to him/her intially. Otherwise there are agencies which specifically deal with retail jobs, some listings here or here

Also try large business like B&Q, Halfords etc.
Are you looking at keeping in the banking side or are you willing to down grade to shop floor work.
Be honest as to why, ie costs, childcare, wanting to be a Mum etc. as they will apprieciate those reasons more for a downgrade than anything airy fairy like brand loyalty etc.

I used to work for Tesco and would say this is a bad time of year to be getting a job there, they will have taken on lots of extra christmas staff in october/november and after the new year will be in the process of getting rid or keeping a few of these and not recruiting.

I would think you would be better of waiting til April time.

Still worth asking in store though, just go to the customer service desk, they will have application forms there if they are recruiting.

LIZS · 19/12/2007 12:57

In the current retail climate I'd be surprised if they are looking to create jobs tbh.

dooley1 · 19/12/2007 12:59

be careful though. I take it your kids are preschool? Don't forget to take into account what will happen once they are at school. You might not want to be working afternoons and evenings then when you've got school pick up to do and homework etc to supervise

M&S were advertising on the JobcentrePlus website not too long ago.

Our local tesco has a few vacancies up at the moment, I have always worked in an office and wondered if I could use a till etc.

Anna8888 · 19/12/2007 13:03

Twinkie1 - I completely understand why you think you are getting no rewards for working incredibly hard in your current job.

What are your skills? Is working in a supermarket the only avenue open to you?

scrummymummy1965 · 30/12/2007 18:51

Just be aware that jobs in retail like M & S or Tesco usually means that you may have to work a weekend shift.

yes you just go in and ask about jobs, and an application form.

some stores make you do a 'team building' exercise as part of the interview process, others its just a plain interview.

Jackstini · 02/01/2008 20:37

Any luck Twinkie? Hope you had a nice Christmas (hopefully NOT working!)

M&S do mainly advertise on their website.

I have asked a couple of times instore and i'm always told to check the site instead.
