Is anyone here at Magistrate?

I'm thinking about joining the magistrate service. I'm a teacher and think it might be something I could do in the school holidays now that my kids have gone to uni.

What skills are they looking for? What sort of issues arise? Do you feel well supported by the legal experts? What are the main pros and cons?

Thanks.

Following OP, I’ve also been looking into this! Hope you get some good replies.

What info have you found out? I started looking at the Witness Service and then I thought why not go the whole hog instead. I'd still be really happy to do Witness Service support anyway, but now I've had the idea I would like to find out if it's something that might be a better fit for me.

I’m not but something very similar. Have a look on the judicial appointments website. Lots of information on there which should be helpful. I think the magistrate competitions are also advertised when they put up the notices for the legally qualified judicial appointments. It might take a while for your area to come up.

I’d spend a few days in court to see whether you’d even enjoy it. Lots of people hate it. It’s emotionally very draining.

Can you do it school holidays only?
I have a friend who has just retired as a Magistrate and I fancied it but I work too many hours to fit it in

hello
I am a magistrate - you have to commit to a minimum of 2 days per month, not sure how that would work around half term / school holidays, but worth contacting to find out ! Its a pretty length application / training - it took me about a year from the start of my application to starting out in court, !
