titanic25 · 04/12/2021 12:44

DH is threatened to put on PIP via teams meeting, new to role and works as civil servant. Been with employer for 6 years.

what should he do ? he is informed over phone but no written notes or proper feedback to work on . I made him join union but he does want to think it through about next steps.
he is main earner. it's freaking me out but I also being supportive and can't show my emotions.

Threatened? Or informed that if his performance doesn't improve he'll be put on a PIP to support him in getting to the required level?

Being told of a pip possibility informally is the correct process. Once it's written up it's on his official employment records- his manager is doing him a favour.

Not sure why he needs a union for that as it's a standard process. If your partner doesn't think he's under performing and thinks he's being bullied then by all means get a union involved.

If however he is a poor performer maybe he should focus on improving.

Thank you . yes i should have used advised word.

Never been in situation like this before.
He does not think he is under performing at all . He is putting more hours but he thinks its more like political blame game.
His job to change practices and no one wants to change and people are complaining

If he thinks he's being managed out he can either meet the pip targets (which should be SMART) and fight, or leave.

Dinosauraddict · 04/12/2021 20:36

Civil servant here. What grade and profession is he? Does he think he has been underperforming? Are there other people in his team his grade for direct comparisons? Does he have a learning plan (not PIP just development plan?) You say he's new to role - how new?

He is scrum master , promoted from project management team. as far as i am aware he is not on any learning / training plan. But he is with employer more than 6 years. He thought he is doing really good and his morale is really down as he never see it coming. He is qualified with relevant certifications

the post mean whatever will be asked or they want him to do , he has to do it. But worry is are they trying to fire him by mentioning it all of sudden ? He showed me all the emails few months ago with so much praise from senior management

Scrum Master is job role not grade. Is he a Grade 7?

laalaaleelee · 04/12/2021 22:44

Hi, can I ask what his targets are? What has he tried to change and received pushback / negative feedback on?

A scrum master is quite different from a traditional project manager, could well be a culture clash. Either the org resisting more agile ways of working and stuck in traditional project management mindset - or perhaps the other way round if that's your OH's background.

Being new to role, is there a community of practice he can get support from, either in that dept or cross gov? Could he get a mentor?

This is bizarre as he met all his delivery targets and receiving monthly bonus. i am not from IT background. so apologies if i can't explain it properly. His job is protect development team from outside interferences .Few people dont like if he change different practice and dont want to work at all, as he is scrum master ,manager without power so he can only help them with coach , mentor etc . workload should be sorted by their line manager . product manager wants dh to do their job by controlling dev team which he should not be supposed to do.Its causing clashes. From my understanding employer, employed a person to create something but its tough with people mindset. its giving him stress.

Although this may be a red herring as regards the bigger problem, if he has been a civil servant for six years he must have a grade.
(Is he on secondment?) The grade might be something like Grade 7 or 6. Or it could be something like Deputy Director?

Does he have a performance and development plan with goals?

Are you absolutely sure they’re talking about a PIP and not a regular P&D conversation?

He is absolutely sure that its PIP, so feedback is team dies not feel supported but few team members dont want to have one to one with him and normally make excuses that they are very busy

@titanic25 is this your husband's first time managing/getting results out of others?

Based on what you've said he might be struggling to get results out of those in his scrum. Maybe he does need support with that. Especially if you say 121s/team feedback sessions aren't taking place because they are "busy". Reads to me your husband might be struggling in this agile work style (passing the exams is the easy part) despite how good he as an individual might be.

Yes its the first year as manager. He is managing three teams and other two are fine. He said 121 s are not necessary for his job but he can do if team member ask for it , they feel unsupported and unprotected but dont come to him . i dont get it.
bottom line is what i gather product manager is picking up his line manager tasks and in return product manager wants him to pick up his tasks so he might be coming across as controlling the team when in ideally scrum role he should be using soft skills and team s representative and team thinks he is siding with manager. its tough one

An E grade sounds more like he's a consultant and not directly employed by the civil service?

He is directly employed and permanent position

@PearlclutchersInc by E I think @titanic25 means grade EO

titanic25 · 05/12/2021 15:14

The reason i have started this thread as i am freaking out in regards to mortgage etc although he has got another skill and can be self employed with that as he s done years before.
its first time in my life I felt vulnerable . i heard so many stories about losing job etc but it feels like first time i feel like wow and had to really think about how easy is it to be in that position even if you are permanently employed . its definitely eye opening experience

titanic and wanna thanks for explaining

tribpot · 05/12/2021 15:56

Does he have any mentoring from a more experienced scrum master? It's a different role from project manager and he needs to be supported. What's coming out during the retrospectives? I agree with him, regular one-to-ones aren't useful in a high performing Agile team, but here it feels there are issues to sort out that aren't being properly aired.

If he doesn't have a mentor, I would definitely recommend he asks for this.

ArnoldBee · 05/12/2021 16:25

In many departments a grade e is an seo so the grade and dept would give some indication what the expectations are.
