New workplace; much drama

I have a new job. I'm only part time and I generally really like my job and hours. The company is well known in my industry. I'd say it's an industry leader actually, albeit a small company. So it seemed perfect!

Recently, I have noticed there is a lot of drama at work. This week, we've had one employee stomp off site in her break. She didn't come back until she was hunted down on the other side of town. She got fired as it wasn't the first time apparently. Another employee cried today because one of the managers said something, (I don't know what, but apparently it was quite twatty), to her. Another one had a personal issue which he told the entire place about, but then it turned out that the problem wasn't really a problem and he'd just made a mistake. I've had one person bite my head off this week because I had to pass on a message, which tbf wasn't very good news, but which wasn't anything to do with me, (classic shooting the messenger).

Anyway, much drama! Thought I'd ask if anyone else has had similar and how long they gave it to adjust to the drama, or for it to subside... I really like my job, but not sure my blood pressure can take the roller coaster if it's like this every week Confused. I won't leave till I have something else lined up, but I am wondering if I should be keeping a beady eye out for other opportunities...

Sounds perfect to me, I love drama (not harmful, hurtful drama, or bulling, but mild disobedience and troublesome people).

You know those people who say they hate drama whilst causing it all over the place (absolutely, not saying you're one of them), I'm the opposite, I LOVE drama, and get none. None at all.

...with any luck some of your colleagues will get caught snogging in the loo at the Christmas do! Such stuff as dreams are made of.

BreadBreadBread · 02/12/2021 21:18

😂😂😂 I love that you love drama.

I mean...at least I've got some good stories!

There are already a few couples who are all part of the company...

So you may be right about the snogging in toilets at the Christmas party. Bet that's how they all got together Wink

Seriously, I have always worked in tech startups, full of gossip and drama, there was one where there was a specific sofa, in a particular person's house - where relationships were started, ended, consummated it went down in history as the sofa that X and Y person got together, and now they're married.

Always after work drinks. It was brilliant (I was on the leadership team, so feigned indifference, and certainly never got involved in the gossip).

My work is like that. I’ve been there 5 years. It took me about 6 months to adjust. I still hate it though.

BreadBreadBread · 02/12/2021 22:46

I think it's probably just the initial shock of the place tbh. My last work was the same industry but was pretty tame by comparison!

Funnily enough, I was thinking "give it six months at least". Which I will unless I stomp off site a few times and hit the town, which will inevitably lead to my downfall. Maybe I'll adjust and just think "oh look, Liz is crying again and Frank has gone off in a huff. Lewis says John is being a massive dickhead. Harry just kicked his PC in a fit of pique. The usual"!

Ooo PC kicking! Our CTO once got furious, pushed himself away from his desk on his wheelie chair, stormed out yelling "WHAT THE FUCKKKK" but then got stuck in the vestibule between the office and the lift, with no key fob, so was just stuck there in a 1.5x1.5m room... furious and huffy.

Best day ever.

It sounds brilliant, like desk-Netflix - I’d just sit back and enjoy it.

SmallProvincial · 03/12/2021 07:23

'DESKFLIX' you heard it here first 😂😂

BreadBreadBread · 03/12/2021 07:55

It is definitely in the style of a not very well written Netflix series. I need time to adjust to people crying at work and stopping out before I can find it entertaining though 😬.

Wish I worked there - I'll apply for your job if you leave 🤣
