Part time employee - work on day off after sick day?

I work three days a week - flexible but they are usually Monday/Wednesday/Thursday

This week I was down to work Monday, Wednesday/Thursday but I had to take today off as was unwell.

I'm feeling better and offered to work tomorrow.

Does that sound right or should I just keep it as my day off with today covered by sick pay?

Also, when Mondays are bank holidays, I usually work a Tuesday instead and to do the three days a week.

Does this all sound correct? I'm long-term freelance and new to being employed in a part time role - still working out how holidays/sick days work.

I wouldn't work tomorrow unless it was for a day in lieu. If you were sick on a Friday would you work on a Saturday? Same principle.

I don't think you should be working on a Tuesday of Bank Holiday weeks, you're losing out on BHs. But I'm not completely certain about that one. Can you speak to a union rep?

If you are employed rather than freelance you shouldn't be making up sick days. It possible that in some situations an employee would take a days holiday instead of a sick day. If you're getting sick pay then I don't see how/why you would make up the time - you'd essentially be working for free.

I'd be pissed off if one of my colleagues did this as it'd become expected. Crazy race to the bottom

It depends on the job I think. Would being ill set you back because no one would cover? Then maybe I might work the other day so as not to get behind (of my own free will though, not as an expectation). The bank holidays doesn’t sound right though.

Who suggested this plan?

Same with bank holidays. I don't work Saturday because I had Monday off

I usually get asked to make up my sick days which are unpaid usually. But that's due to the nature of my job and things need rebooking. I don't really mind unless I have don't childcare as I can make up a day of lost pay. I wouldn't work an extra day after bank holiday though, that's an entitlement included in our annual leave.

Does your workplace have attendance management policies that cover it? I wouldn't be happy if I was pulled up for my sick record if I'd made up the days. Are your days off being re rostered?

No, if you have set days (even if you are flexible with them, they are still your 'base' days) and you are unfortunately too ill to go to work, then that should be classed as sick leave and there should be no expectation to make up the hours.
As others have said, if your colleague works 5 days a week and is too ill to come in, they are not expected to go in over the weekend to make up the hours.

I can see if you are self employed, then you might choose to, but I don't know where freelancers 'sit' between SE and employed.

If you get sick pay it doesn’t seem sensible to work tomorrow instead. Or is it an extra- sick pay for today then a normal day’s pay tomorrow?

In terms of holidays, bank holidays aren’t special- you should have the same total leave entitlement as full timers, pro rata. As long as you’re getting that, coming in on a Tuesday rather than using up a day’s leave entitlement on a bank holiday seems fine to me- leaves you with a higher proportion of holiday to take when you choose. Part timers who work on a Monday often end up with a lot of their leave entitlement taken up by bank holidays.

Yes it makes sense to work Tuesdays when it's a bank holiday, else you'd have to book it as annual leave. But no, take today as a sick day, no need to make up for it.

I wouldn't get sick pay for 1 day off sick so I would possibly offer to do another day to make up the money if it would leave me short that month.

At our work we are allocated bank holidays on a pro rata basis and then book them off if were due to work them. In your situation moving my working day to the Tuesday would give me that BH leave to use another time.

And I wouldn't 'make up' a sick day unless I had something pressing to do. And it would be the equivalent of working overtime.

You shouldn’t have to make up your sick day any more than a full time employee would work the weekend to make up their sick day.

Regarding bank holidays, your annual entitlement should factor in bank holidays. So working on the Tuesday on a week with a bank holiday Monday means that you don’t have to use up any annual leave for the bank holiday itself (full time employees would effectively be using up annual leave on bank holidays).
