Ive spent two days researching and ive come to put something on a powerpoint and my brain has gone on holiday.

I feel mentally paralysed. I backed out of a job interview earlier in the year for the same reason.

Panic is setting in. What do I do!!!???

What subject and industry are you doing your presentation on?

Coteeee · 25/11/2021 12:44

Its nursing healthcare
The topic is to Discuss how the nurse specialist will contribute to the hospital trust meeting the service specifications

Everything is jumbled in my head. I think its the layout or structure that Im struggling with

What structure do you have so far? I’d start by doing nothing but laying out your headings. So:
Agenda
Intro
Service spec of the hospital trust
Nurse duties
(These might be over a few slides and you could split them by topic or area)
Slide on the overlap
Few case studies / examples (ie trust had spec to provide wait times for service users, here is how I did that)
Slide on the gap - ie what’s missing or additional support and how you’d tackle that
Summary of key points

I don’t work in healthcare so some of this might be nonsense but I’d start like that

LiquidGlee · 25/11/2021 12:50

I would just pick the 3 most important points and do a slide for each demonstrating the key points. Remember a PowerPoint shouldn’t be loads of words, it should just summarise the main points. It’s what you actually talk about that is the engaging and important part! I’m also a nurse and for one of my presentations I didn’t even make a PowerPoint and I still got the job, so don’t stress too much about that part!

Chewbecca · 25/11/2021 12:50

One simple mantra I like is

  • tell them what you are going to say
  • say it
  • tell them what you said

Good luck!

Coteeee · 25/11/2021 12:51

Why has my brain turned to mush and panic. I know the topic, I know the job....I just cant quite pull all the differing things in to some order in my head that makes for a good job interview presentation.
Noooooooooooooo....contemplating sticking my head under a cold shower to shock it

1.Define the objectives
2.Highlight what activities nurse does and how each can relate back to (STAR)

  1. Summarise the outcome of role and trust for patient and targets
CMOTDibbler · 25/11/2021 12:56

10 minutes is about 10 slides then, and usually its tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them it, tell them you told them.
Title, slide 1
Slide 2, role of the specialist nurse in
What are the service specifications? Write them down on slide 3
Then think about what the challenges are for the department in meeting them. Thats slide 4/5
Then what could you do about those challenges - slides 6/7/8
Then summarise what you could do - if you have figures on how much they are missing the targets now you could say that as nurse specialist implementing x you would target improving y from a to b. Slide 9
Thank you and any questions, slide 10. Done!

Coteeee · 25/11/2021 12:57

I think were its tangled in my head is that its all tangled up.
For example -
If I talk about the patient at the heart of care, Im also discussing education and training, cost effectiveness, clinical expertise and a few more because they all put the patient at the centre of care.

Equally if I talk about the cost effectiveness, Im also talking about the impact on putting the patient at the centre of care, education and training, clinical expertise

I dont know how to talk about one without talking about all of it because it all matters

Decode which are your priorities and embed the other points, to a oid repetition.

PineappleWilson · 25/11/2021 13:02

It's an 8 minute presentation, with a minute to introduce and a minute to round up. Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them then tell them what you've told them.

Use the slides to give you a structure e.g. what is the role of a nurse specialist, what are the service specifications. Aim to talk for a minute per slide, so 8 slides plus front cover, intro, round up and "any questions". Does this help?

AlexaShutUp · 25/11/2021 13:06

I was once given a tip about presentations that had helped me - think about what you want the audience to feel, think and do as a result of what you say. I find it really helpful to keep that in mind. And yes to the say what you're going to say, say it then say what you've said structure.

With that title, I would briefly summarise what the service specifications are first, on one slide, then talk about each one in more detail, with a separate slide for each. For each one, you outline how you think the nurse specialist would be able to contribute to meeting them and state clearly how your own experience/skills/personal qualities would enable you to make that contribution.

If there are too many service specifications to talk about all of them in detail, then pick out the most relevant 3 and note briefly that there is more that you could say about the others if there was time to do so.

Good luck!!!Smile

QueenieMum · 25/11/2021 13:21

You've got this! You've given 2 examples of points you could make, you don't have to speak at length about each of the related areas, could you make them bullet points on your slide so that you can mention them, show you know this is wider ranging than just the initial point, and then explain your main point in greater detail? I don't know this subject area at all but you've had some great suggestions from PPs, sell yourself, your skills, experience & ideas and give them something to feel & think about after you leave.

You don't have to have any words on a slide, it could just be a picture or a title that acts as a prompt if that works better for you?

You really do have this!

Coteeee · 25/11/2021 16:24

Thank you all for responding whilst i had my mini melt down. I luckily had a Training session at the gym which has burned off some of the nerves.
A few of you mentioned to focus on three points..Thank you...-
The Patient: Better Experience and Better outcome
Adding Value: Financial and Resource Sustainability
Our People: Leadership and Partnership

Found Im more productive stood up at the kitchen counter top with no music or TV.

I might start with the Adding Value section as we need this to beable to carry out the other things. Then go onto the Our People Section as we need partnerships between services and we need to look after the biggest resource - staffing and then finish off with the Patient Section as they are ultimately what its all about and why were here.

I'll hopefully apply some of my own experiences from work in how ive already carried out these actions....or something like that.

I think i'll keep posting as a hand hold for myself to help my nerves.

I worried about making the slides appealing like having some decent pictures maybe. In my head I have what Id like which would make use of the animation things on the powerpoint and all that jazz and the reality is probably going ot be more like a few bullet points and a pic in the corner maybe.

Its an interview via microsoft teams....so itll be interesting...

what do I wear???? given im behind a computer

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 25/11/2021 17:36

Keep your slides simple - no pictures unless they add value and no animations. You're showing how you can communicate effectively so it should be nice, clear, and professional.

Wear a top with an unfussy neckline in a colour that pops for you - try a few out with a friend on Zoom first. Prop your laptop up so the camera is just above your eye level and fiddle around with lighting to improve how you look

Cascascascas · 25/11/2021 17:45

@Coteeee

3/4 slides.
Practise in front of family
Have note post cards in case you need to remember something and number then if you drop them.

Coteeee · 26/11/2021 09:06

Thank you guys! @CMOTDibbler fab advice re what to wear thank you.

Im going to have he laptop on the kitchen counter as Im on the shorter side and it puts the laptop roughly about the right height with a book or two underneath. Then I can stand while presenting and itll feel like a normal presentation...i.e i can move about on the spot - dont think theyll beable to see me, whilst presenting. Presume it must be through a screen share or something like that.

Im back on the presentation this morning. Im keeping to @PenelopeVonDelius 's idea of the timing - 1 minute for beginning and the end slide and 2 minutes for each of the 4 slides.

Two minutes is not a long time at all!!

Im going to keep messaging on here for a hand hold - emptying my head seems to help lol

Ive added a fourth slide of Service development: Innovation. I may bin this though an stick to the three topics - I suppose it will give me a few seconds longer on the other things and I can touch on service development in each of the three areas.

Im possibly not making sense lol

Skills- a must

Coteeee · 26/11/2021 13:00

@languagelover96 thank you.

Ive got a few things down and feel much happier at this moment. I'll print the slides and notes out and look over them....then practice presenting tomorrow.

The local town are turning on the christmas lights tonight so I have a good distraction this evening.

Turning my attention to interview questions this afternoon
