Career or second child ?

MissK24 · 21/11/2021 06:51

Hello all,
I finish my accountancy course next year. My daughter will be turning six. Me and my OH would like another child however I can't decided when the right time is. Whether to have another child , then pursue my career or do it the other way round and put expanding the family on hold for a bit longer.

Thanks in advance

I’d look at doing 6- 12 months work first to get your foot in the door.

Career

workoholic · 21/11/2021 17:34

Depends how old you are. If older then child.
If early-mid 20s then depends on money and if you need the mat pay.

Agree with this.

Depends on age as others have said...generally, I would say career as if you can get a job first, you can then have mat leave and not have a gap in your CV, but if you are mid 30s or older I would prioritise a second child

CasaBonita · 29/11/2021 22:02

Definitely career

twinkletoesbluesky · 29/11/2021 22:07

You can always get into a career once qualified but you won't always be able to have more children Smile Who is going to ' remember' your career. It's much more important to have a beautiful family first.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 29/11/2021 22:10

I would want too big an age gap, nor would l assume l could get pregnant easily
Nobody looks back at life and wishes they had worked more!

Monkeyrules · 29/11/2021 22:11

For me I'd prioritise having a second child. Do you want an age gap larger than six years? Also what if you have difficulty conceiving? Accountancy is one of those careers you can get work in pretty easily once you've qualified if you work in private practice. Also I guess you'll still be working while you're pregnant so you'll be getting experience until you go on maternity leave.

Lifewith · 29/11/2021 22:12

Can't you do both?

ZenNudist · 29/11/2021 22:15

How old are you? Accountancy is a family friendly career if you can get up the ladder before having kids.

It depends on your priorities. If you want short gaps between your dc you're going to have to crack on with that. If you are happy with one dc and maybe another when they are older then get going with your career.

ZenNudist · 29/11/2021 22:16

Also are you actually qualified? Getting a training contract easier when younger.

firstimemamma · 29/11/2021 22:32

Your age is the key here really op.

firstimemamma · 29/11/2021 22:32

If you are over 30 I'd personally choose child.

languagelover96 · 30/11/2021 09:39

Child if over 30. If not see about doing some more work first.

Constellationstation · 30/11/2021 10:13

@Lifewith

Can't you do both?
This is what I was thinking too
user0176 · 30/11/2021 19:11

I don't understand why you can't do both, accountancy is quite 9-5 no? Potential for flexible working? Had both my kids whilst climbing the ladder, even went part time for a bit but still managed to progress.

MissK24 · 09/12/2021 21:23

Thank you for your replies. I am 25 (26 next month), employed as a kitchen assistant, so not in an accountancy setting

I'd just stick to one child, with the state the world's in and with costs going up and up constantly.

DSGR · 09/12/2021 21:29

I’d have a child as I wouldn’t want a big age gap but I’d just take one year of maternity and get cracking on the career

felulageller · 09/12/2021 21:37

At your age career. Your DC's will need you in a good job to have a comfortable childhood

Er what type of accountancy and employer is family friendly??
Macmickmoo · 10/12/2021 08:29

I'd get a job first - get some security behind you and paid maternity benefit before thinking about another child then you can decide if you want a career break. Having some experience to reinforce your qualifications will make you more employable when you decide to return to work.
