Shock hmm depending on location up north no half that south maybe but unlikely

PetulantClerk · 20/11/2021 01:49

South.
It seems a lot of responsibilities. I would have expected to hire cleaning help, for example.

I don't think it's unreasonable!!

Would £30k be reasonable to ask for this job?
PetulantClerk · 20/11/2021 03:13

Thank you @NinaJames I was looking for something like that!

More! in the south, that's hard work

Pixxie7 · 20/11/2021 04:28

Given what a newly qualified nurse earns I think that it is a lot to ask particularly as a lot of the things listed are weekly at most.

RedRobin100 · 20/11/2021 04:32

@clarkkentsglasses is it?!!

DockOTheBay · 20/11/2021 04:33

What salary have they suggested?

I don't think it seems like that much work, things like restocking towels and empty bins are 5 minute jobs. Being child and oet friendly doesn't take any time.

It looks like a long list but really it's cleaning, laundry, shopping, cooking.

cookiemonster2468 · 20/11/2021 04:45

It is a big list of jobs, but the jobs listed are low-skilled and you would not get £30k for this sort of work in other settings if it were a normal 37 hour week.

I think you might want to work out an hourly rate instead of an annual rate, as it partly depends how many hours they are asking you to do.

If you're going to be working 50/60 hour weeks (as some housekeepers do) then of course £30k is reasonable, however for a normal 37 hour week, you would expect a lot less in a job like this.

I don't think it's quite a minimum wage work, but it's unskilled. £10-12 an hour.

cookiemonster2468 · 20/11/2021 04:48

Of course you also have to think about what makes you "the right person".

If you've previously been a housekeeper for families similar to this one and have good references etc. then that might justify asking for a little more.

If you're inexperienced I don't think you will get £30k for this.

Pepperama · 20/11/2021 05:14

£30k sounds rather too much for this, it's more than most graduate starting salaries in the public sector.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/11/2021 05:52

Depends how big the house is and how many people are living in it. It doesn't really seem like an onerous list of tasks. I would say £30k is an over generous salary for that.

Whataday21 · 20/11/2021 06:47

You see child friendly and pet friendly makes me think it's actually way more work. Walking dogs? Cleaning up and feeding them. Children leave dirt and mess. Will they start asking you to drop the children places? Working out an hourly rate is a good idea and asking about the working pattern. It sounds intriguing.

PetulantClerk · 20/11/2021 15:02

What salary have they suggested?
They haven't indicated any figure, even as a guideline.

There are at least four dogs in the household (medium sized, three of them hairy). Keeping the place clean to "immaculate standards" would likely be impossible. And keeping the outdoor areas clean could be a never-ending task!

I'm wondering if this is one of those situations where they describe the ideal but don't really expect to get it.

I would want 30k to clean ad keep a massive house to high standards with 4 dogs plus children. The hoover will never be switched off. Constant mopping after muddy dogs. Ferrying kids everywhere.
Tbh it sounds a fucking nightmare, with anal home owners. Most dog homes have owners who are understanding of some pet hair about the place, no matter how hard you work

Look for something else!

£29000 is the average salary for a Police Officer in the U.K. - a qualified Police Constance would take several years to make £30,000. A Nurse (degree level qualification) with up to 4 years post qualifying experience makes about £29,000. This employer will pay whatever they need to to get the employee they want, and this person does have to work unsupervised which should make it more than minimum wage but I think £30,000 is optimistic.
