Struggling to hand in Notice

pcofmushu · 19/11/2021 11:03

I have been successful in my application for a new role (promotion, ticks all the right boxes, brilliant development opportunity for me), however I am having anxieties about handing my notice into my current employer. The new role doesn't start until Feb/March next year, and I'm stewing over when and how I inform my current boss that I am leaving.
My current employer has been great to me but this new role is an opportunity I cannot refuse.

Any/all advice or wake-up calls welcome!

Thanks in advance x

Has the contract arrived and been signed etc?

What's your notice period?

negomi90 · 19/11/2021 11:12

What's your notice on your current contract? I'd do that notice, but wait until you've signed papers at the new job. If your notice is long, then tell the new job, that you won't be able to start until x time after signing the contract.

Notice period is 1 month. I probably should have phrased the OP better - I guess I'm struggling to tell my current employer that I'm going to be leaving. I won't need to hand my notice in until the new year, but I will need to let my employer know that they can expect a reference soon. (The new role have said they won't request this reference until I tell them they can). I know "there is no loyalty in business" but I guess I don't want to upset anyone!

ah, I was going to say, no loyalty in business, they'd let you go if they had to.

you know your referee so only you know the right way to time it. If they are decent, they will be very pleased you got a great new job.

Congratulations and don't feel bad above moving up - it's a normal part of life!

*about

no promotion for me and my typos!

No business is loyal, they'd get rid of you tomorrow if they had to. A good employer should be pleased for someone moving on to something better.

workoholic · 19/11/2021 16:10

Meh, they'd quit and leave you. If redundancies come up they'd get rid.
Thats what I tell myself when I feel guilty.
If that helps...

Presumably that means the new employer is happy to request references once you’ve resigned then? As long as you have all the relevant paperwork, contract etc all signed, that’s fine.

Telling them you’re going to be leaving on x date IS resigning, so just get new job to hold until you’ve done that.
