Civil Service Employee Contract

Hi,

I am new to the civil service sector and will be starting a new job in December. Can someone tell me if CS employees get an employment contract or is it a letter of appointment? Roughly when did you receive it?

My husband thinks I should get some form of contract by Day 1 but I am not sure.

Thanks.

You should get your contract prior to starting as you need to sign to agree the t&c’s, salary, hours etc. Same as you should into regarding your bank details, next of kin etc. Call HR and ask

The very latest you should receive it now is on the first day of employment.

In my current post I had it before I started, in my previous one I got it on my first day. Before that I’d never been given a contract in 10+ yrs of being in the CS!

I work in HR in civil service. Lots of civil service departments only issue the contract on the first day of service. It's a pain but if that's how they are set up there isn't a way to generate the contract earlier. If you need something in advance confirming the job offer, terms and conditions etc then the recruiting manager or HR should be able to pop something in writing to you.

Thanks everyone. I spoke to HR and it looks like they are in the process of sending me a draft of my contract. Smile

Yes I got mine a few days before I started the role too.

A related question to those who may know - when you get a pay increase are you meant to get a new contract. Example - starting point for band 4 staff went up by £1000 but contract still quotes the old figures.

Should a new one be issued if pay changes or you move up a pay point?

No.

@NavigatingAdolescence

Thanks - How would this work when providing evidence of salary to mortgage brokers etc. Obviously you can supply payslips but I've been asked for a contract stating my salary which on the contract is incorrect?

Ask for a letter from your HR team/shared service centre. Much less work (for them) than issuing 465,000 revised contracts twice a year.
