Change of hours taking too long

Longdistance · 15/11/2021 19:57

I raised with my work back in May that I’d like to finish earlier, start earlier by just half an hour. I normally finish at 5.30. That last half hour could be put to better use as I’m just sat there like a lemon. The earlier start would benefit them too and I’ve put this case across to them. It’s now November and I’ve had it pushed back and back. I’ve now picked up all of the work from a colleague who was part time and then retired and another senior colleague who left. I’ve been told I’m a great employee, no issues etc.
I’ve been really amiable towards them and I’ve still not got what I asked for. They’re looking at our job descriptions.
They’re now saying January. I’m bloody furious Angry
Would you be angry? Am I right in thinking that this is an unacceptable amount of time to wait?
Feel like telling them to shove up their arsehole!

If they’ve agreed it, what’s the reason they’re giving you for the delay implementing it?

ChicCroissant · 15/11/2021 20:19

Have they agreed the change of hours? I'm not getting that impression from the OP, more that the company does not want to do this.

Mantlemoose · 15/11/2021 21:03

If you made a formal FWR they must make a decision within 3 months. Have they agreed or not?

Longdistance · 15/11/2021 22:31

My manager has agreed, the top boss has been dragging his feet on the issue even though he’s been told about. They’re reviewing our job descriptions which is why they’re taking so long.
They knew the part timer was retiring months ago and they knew the senior colleague was leaving two years ago, as her dh was the boss and he was retiring. So it’s not like it was all a surprise that I was taking on work and so were my other colleagues. Not to the extent I have. I just feel like they’re taking the piss. They’re not paying me anymore for this extra work either.

Crikey I'd be looking for a new job by now. All that delay and buck-passing for the sake of a 30 min shift in time. Has "top boss" got nothing better else to do with their time than micro-manage a routine change that should be put through on the nod. Really they're pathetic.

daisychain01 · 17/11/2021 05:31

What does reviewing job descriptions have to do with them letting you change your start and end times by 30 mins? If that's the lame excuse they've given you then they clearly don't value their people or their worklife balance, if they've forced you to sit there like a lemon at 5pm - presumably the work has dried up by then? I'd definitely be having words about not taking on all that other work if you're getting no remuneration for that.

Longdistance · 17/11/2021 07:15

Exactly. I’m not getting paid any extra for the extra work I’ve picked up. Again, last night at 5pm I was sat there, all my work was completed as it comes in emails. Even my immediate boss went home and locked the door after himself 🙄
My top bosses son was unwell and our office is linked to his house, my stupid colleague agreed to keep an eye on his son whilst boss had meetings. It was distracting and quite frankly I escape my own dc to get peace I certainly don’t want to entertain a sick kid. I didn’t engage (poor kid though).
I’ve started to think about leaving. All the old problems from the previous top boss haven’t been resolved yet. The rots still there.

I’ve now been asked to put my case across tomorrow and with HR, not that I’ve already spoken to them ten times either. It’s getting tiring and so pathetic. I wish I hadn’t asked now!

2020isnotbehaving · 18/11/2021 18:55

Why can’t you leave if the boss is leaving and there is no work? Can you ask for a trial tomorrow to see if anyone notices any difference? They can’t object as they can say no after and likely hood is no body will notice any negative affects. Failing that I’d stop doing extra work do a go slow. Give and take goes both ways

daisychain01 · 18/11/2021 20:55

Quite frankly this sort of crap is just plain bullying, infantilising and shouldn't have a place in 21st century organisations. Staff shouldn't be micromanaged and humiliated by making them sit there until it's "time to go home".

I'm glad you're looking for another job OP, don't wait your life and career in such a dreadful company.

Longdistance · 18/11/2021 22:08

Thanks for the replies. I’ll update tomorrow, but Fridays are massively busy for me and top boss and HR want a meeting 🙄 fucking clueless idiots!

I had the same request several years ago now (change from 9am-5.30pm to 8.30am-5pm) and I had answer within a few days and started the new hours the same week.

I’m not sure what to suggest, but it’s quite poor on their behalf.

Longdistance · 18/11/2021 22:53

@DixonD thanks. Yes, it’s absolutely pathetic. A real poor show. It’s the fact that I’ve taken on extra work from two others, I’m not being paid any more and all I’m asking is for a change of hours, that not only help me, but help the business.
One thing I have to do in the morning that is imperative, needs to be done by 10am cannot be physically done by 10pm. It’s been tested by other colleagues when I’ve been absent ie; sickness, holiday etc. Moving the time forward would be beneficial to their business, I have explained this several times, but no, I’ve got to go through the rigmarole again tomorrow.
I will have these last two meetings. After this I will tell them it is unacceptable to have another meeting about something I have rehashed in double figures to them for something so petty.

How did today go?

Longdistance · 22/11/2021 14:11

Just coming back to this. I couldn’t go to this meeting as my dm fell ill on Friday and was hospitalised. I’m surprised they bothered to let me go see her, it’s like thy can’t do anything without me. She’s still in hospital and I’m very stressed.
I had a meeting earlier with my manager and HR lady, who put my case across really well. Apparently I’m going to get a verdict today.

ChristmasPlanning · 22/11/2021 20:01

So surety to hear about your DM, hope she gets the help she needs Thanks

I also hope your request is granted

Sorry that should say "so sorry to hear about your DM
Longdistance · 22/11/2021 21:36

Thanks @ChristmasPlanning. My boss didn’t get back to me, so I’m left in limbo again.

I'd be looking for another job and when leaving I'd be telling them why.

ChristmasPlanning · 23/11/2021 19:18

That's ridiculous!

Longdistance · 23/11/2021 21:43

I’m now having a meeting on Friday afternoon. One of my busiest times of the week for me. If my work isn’t done, I’m certainly not staying late.
If they turn around and say no after 6 months, they shove their job where the sun don’t shine!

OP posts:
ChristmasPlanning · 27/11/2021 11:57

How did it go? I hope your Mum is recovering

Longdistance · 28/11/2021 21:14

@ChristmasPlanning thanks for coming back.
Well, we sat and had our meeting on Friday. They’d like me in earlier and it works out I’d be of more use to them starting earlier. Well, who would’ve though that? Hmm anyway, They’ve offered me more hours, so more money, but it works out that I can finish at 5. I got an apology from top boss for how long it’s taken.
They’ve given me time to think about it —maybe 6 months— over the next few days.
