To feel sick with nerves

When I have to talk to people (non colleagues) for work?

I seem to be getting more nervous as I get older and more experienced, not less!

My job often involves having to explain to people why we are not taking their complaint further and by and large I can get away with email which I find easier. I am experienced in the field and have been in the organisation for over 5 years.

People are getting more nasty as the years go by and I have often had some very unpleasant accusations thrown at me. But to my colleagues I appear confident and calm. The reality is I feel shaky and sick. This is even if I don't expect the conversation to be abusive. Thankfully I still work from home a lot so it doesn't get noticed day to day but I notice it! I hate it!

How can I overcome this nervousness? I am looking for a new job but I am also reasonably well paid so it's tricky.

Thanks for any advice.

I think you are right to do email as much as possible as it’s a kind of ‘wall’

Not sure re nerves: can you practice a script which does not trigger customers to feel angry? Agree people expect more these days than in the past - but by the time they are talking to you they must be frustrated
