So I applied for a job with HMRC in January and was put on a reserve list.
In August I applied for a role with Home office.

I was offered the HMRC role a few weeks ago and told my manager...amazing....BUT the Regional manager then offered to match HMRC salary so after much deliberation I stayed. A big part of this is being comfortable yet this was the reason I wanted to go..plus 20yrs service with current employer.
That was 2 weeks ago.
Today Ive been offered the Home office role....flabbergasted but over the moon, I really wanted it.
It will now mean a pay cut though 🙈 and my manager is going to go mad if I now resign.....but i need to go dont I ????
Work is extremely busy right now, no staff following redundancies and a big upturn in business, i dont want to burn bridges but no ones going to be happy with me are they?

No one is irreplaceable. Sounds like your boss NEEDS to keep you (needs to keep any staff) hence the payrise.
It’s not really a pay cut if you’ve only just got a matching payrise. There’s a reason you’ve applied and interviewed for other jobs.

If you want to leave. Go. Do what you want to do. Loyalty means nothing in business

It does sound like they were desperate rather than valued you - take the opportunity.

Congratulations. You say it’s a pay-cut, but right after saying you’re over the moon! I would trust that reaction.

Yes, it’ll be cringey giving in your notice again, but these things happen. The awkwardness will be over once you’ve done it and then you’ll be into your notice period. You haven’t been unprofessional in any way so i don’t think you should hesitate if you want this new job.

If your gut says go for it, then go for it! In the world of work I don’t think you owe loyalty unless in very special circumstances.. it’s taken me a while to learn that the hard way. You owe a decent performance but that doesn’t include lifelong loyalty. Don’t feel bad about doing what’s best for you Xox

After the day from hell ive decided im going for it and have submitted all of my info for the pre-employment checks. I know this can take a few weeks to come through so im not going to mention anything until ive received the formal offer.....then ill have 4 weeks notice to work which should be bearable even if theres an atmosphere 🤞

You don’t owe them my anything. If they go mad then that reflects badly on them, it is entirely their fault that they are short of staff.
