I started a new full time job recently and I'm already getting bad vibes from the place, my boss is meant to be training me and I haven't heard anything about it since I started and I have no set contract when it wasnt agreed as a zero hours job when I got it. Also my dbs is being held over my head incase I leave? I've been told if i quit the price will be taken out of my pay check because they don't want me taking it to a new job for free, I have never heard of this reason and I'm sure isn't standard practice! I'm already job hunting again as I've had 2 people approach me now and tell me I shouldn't have taken the job and it's a bad place to work. I wish I had done more research into it before taking the job and now I'm kicking myself slightly for jumping into it so quickly. Will it look bad on my cv to have literally just started a new job and to be leaving so quickly?

Is it a care job? Unfortunately this with the DBS seems very usual in that sector, but not elsewhere.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 09/11/2021 19:39

@Spiceup it's in childcare, I've worked in other childcare settings before and it's been done for me before I've even started the job in every other place so I was quite surprised

Were you informed before you accepted the role that the cost of the DBS would be repayable if you decided to leave? I'm not sure their argument that another employer would get the benefit of that DBS holds true. Most employers organise their own one for new employees, don't they?

Shedmistress · 13/11/2021 08:17

I used to pay myself for the yearly DBS update, makes it much easier to control and you just give them the update reference when you start a new role.

Just put start and end date for that role, and say it wasn't right for you and so you moved on.

HalloweenScrooge · 13/11/2021 08:19

As far as I’m aware the DBS is not transferable so that’s a non issue.

PAFMO · 13/11/2021 08:20

Employers often stipulate if you leave soon after starting you'll have to pay the cost of the DBS back.
That said, it doesn't sound very good. Do you actually see the manager? Are you being paid properly?

Winniemarysarah · 13/11/2021 08:23

I don’t understand your wording. Are you saying you have no contract? In that case just quit, they can’t charge you for anything. If you have signed a zero hour contract then you don’t even need to quit. You can legally look for and start another job, you just turn down any work that may be offered from this one as they can’t force you to take any shifts on a zero hour contract.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/11/2021 08:24

they have paid for your dbs?
how much was it?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/11/2021 08:26

website tells me it is £23

you owe them £23, the cost of the dbs, if you leave.
it is similar to uniform i assume, you are given a uniform, the cost of which comes out of your pay.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 13/11/2021 13:32

I'm reply to all messages 😂
No I haven't signed a contract and I wasn't made aware about paying my dbs or that the funds would be taken out of my pay check if I left in my interview. Also it will cost me £51 to get one done so I'm on the update system.

I would have to pay an extra £13 I think if I moved on to another work place to get it transferred which isn't too bad.
Im going to check that I've been pains correctly as I haven't been on top of that and my friend said to check that also.
We don't have uniform either so I haven't had to pay for that

But do you actually like the job? Regardless of what other people are saying about it and the DBS issue do you like it? There must be a reason you took it.

Whichcatthatcat · 15/11/2021 19:03

It's pretty standard to have to pay for a dbs if you leave a job quickly. It costs the employer around £50 and if you leave there is no benefit for them in having spent that money.

The £13 is not to "transfer 'it. It is a yearly fee to keep on the update service. This means the dbs can be checked by anyone who has your permission, it is permenantly 'live'so gets updated with any convictions you get, so is much more useful and a one off dbs which is only valid on the day its done.

Saying that, you are not happy, so move. There are so many jobs in the industry at the moment, many companies round here are offering great bonuses and incentives to new staff to get people to join them.

Whichcatthatcat · 15/11/2021 19:04

And you have to sign up to the update service very soon after getting the original dbs, so don't hang around
