sorry bit long!
Started job at a charity 4 months ago, been giving it my all as it was a re-connect with an area I care about and my old job was sh*t. Commuted 6 hour round trip once a week when others still at home, started at 7 am, did a double shift on info stand etc.

I was told on day one that the area I am currently working in - for one year funding - is a "moral priority" by the CEO, and that I should look to develop it further. He is not my LM. Weirdly when he told me this he closedthe door of the office to LM couldn't hear.

All went well, I was even offered a promotion by LM to "head up" a new 2-stranded workstream, if I came up with a business plan to take with the board who would potentially fund it properly. Did that, complete with spreadsheet, showed a potential revenue, and email about clarifying what they wanted from the project (possibly too full-on?) in terms of revenue or outreach.

CEO impressed, LM not so much, coming up wtih random idea in the meeting, cutting the meeting in half as she "wanted lunch", and when I queried what she was saying the CEO started visibly shaking. Didn't have time to talk about second strand.

Shaking CEO then began to waffle on about some other avenue he wanted me to look in to (I actually have sector knowldge in this and his idea is a no-go - didnt' say that though).

Now I have been de-moted to formatting a list of competitors for the "business plan" for his idea.

I pushed back this morning (meeting was last week and I was waiting to see if they would clarify) - listing the priorities I thought they wanted me to look at, just got back a terse reply from LM about filling in my list only. Not wanting any financials, market analysis, big picture, partnerships, future planning, branding etc.

WTF did I do wrong? I have been "nice" to colleagues, making sure I bring in cakes for my birthday, time for chats, joining in etc. I may have overstepped the mark though somehow.

What do i do now? lie low? approach CEO? try and have a chat with LM about this?

It sounds to me like you've been recruited into a long-running pissing contest between the CEO and your line manager over territory.

When you say promotion rescinded -- do you mean you were offered role advancement in writing and have had it withdrawn, also in writing?

PlausibleSuit · 08/11/2021 16:24

into the middle of* a long-running etc etc

PlausibleSuit · 08/11/2021 16:25

Urgh, formatting fail. I'll rephrase.

It sounds to me like you've been recruited into the middle of a long-running pissing contest between the CEO and your line manager over territory.

@plausiblesuit yes agree. nightmare. I semi-jokingly said in the meeting "is this the bit where I go and get a coffee so you guys can have a chat?" and they were like "no no no" as if they couldn't be in the room with eachother.

LM has had the marketing manager removed from her charge as "something" went wrong. I'm beginning to feel the same.

What on earth should I do? CEO seems to be a coward.

sorry no promotion offerend in writing, it was more if the board go with it then yes we need this.

can't go to the board with somethingI don't beleive in. can't go to them with the real deal as it's been killed by LM.

thought she had my back!

LM was already signaling about how my ideas might not fit in with how she'd designed the workstreams.

The charity only exists by the skin of its teeth and its been my LM's entire career. like she doesn't want change.

is there some new managing -up technique I should employ here? or just stick it out until I've been there a year?

It just sounds dysfunctional like so many small charities. I would start looking for new jobs now tbh, there's plenty of opportunities atm.

Stovetopespresso · 08/11/2021 17:06

yes @jackiecollinshasnoauthority have been. on their time :) will make all the contacts I need to on the way.
guess I'm just disappointed as my little heart began to believe after quite a patchy career (for the usual reasons) and something I care about, plus the thrill of someone actually appreciating what I did.
siiigh.
