Are these necessary? People I know that work from home don't use them but my new job is telling me it's a necessity

We use them in work to speed up connection. But not necessary as we also have wifi.

Sometimes if our log in doesn’t work on out laptops we have to plug in to an ethernet for security reasons.

Ugh, my start date is tomorrow and people kept telling me not to waste my money that they don't use one from home so I didn't get one thinking it was just unnecessary and my wifi is already really quick

They should be providing you with one?
We just use our own wifi at home and same in the office unless like pp it needs a reboot on the cable

I use one for a faster connection. If you're doing lots of video calls it will reduce lagging.

You most likely have at least one knocking about in your junk drawer though? Internet providers always used to give you a couple with a new router. If not I'm sure someone you know will have one spare.

Might you need to download software when you start, which will be more efficient via ethernet? Are they supplying equipment at all?

Herbie0987 · 31/10/2021 08:42

I use an Ethernet cable as the connection is better than my WiFi. My work would have provided one but we had an unused cable in the family. My router is downstairs and I work upstairs.

Ethernet is miles better than wifi, if your work is mandating it they should be providing you with it though.

I have one but because I live with family it's a case of it's their rooter and don't want anything tampering with it

Yeah they didn't provide, I didn't even realise what it was until last night when I searched it up, I don't know if they will be able to tell I'm not using one?

If it’s for home then they’re probably concerned about interruptions to video calls. WiFi can be flakey if you’re a few rooms away from your router - the signal doesn’t travel through walls very well. Interruptions that you wouldn’t notice for web browsing and video watching could cause jitters in a video call.

If your work setup is close to your router, don’t worry - it won’t make a difference.

It’s not about connection speed - while a wired connection can in theory be faster than a WiFi connection, your overall internet connection is only as fast as its slowest link. Your WiFi connection to the router is already miles faster than your house’s broadband connection to the internet, so being wired to the router won’t make a difference.

Okay, I'm in the room next to it so I'm pretty close, I've never had an issue with it but I guess I'm not a technology pro so I wouldn't know
