Where can I buy a comfortable office chair, which keeps my legs up?

I am applying for office work both at home and in offices. But I wanted to have this element sorted now IYSWIM.

I need to keep my legs elevated as much as possible, else the pain and swelling in my ankles and feet can be unbearable.

Anything that will fit under a standard desk would be brilliant. Or a suitable desk suggestion if it matches the chair!

Would a footstool not work?

My colleagues with similar issues have tall footstools on castors that sit under their desks and act as an extension to their chair?

I think a separate footstool would be difficult for me to use.

I am numb from my bust down and I can't move my legs if I can't see them (neuro issue) so would struggle to manually lift my legs using my hands onto a separate footstool IYSWIM. I use a powerchair to get around, but my chair doesn't have leg supports.

I mean hard to lift my legs onto a foot stool under the desk where I can neither feel or see it.

I think you might need something specialist, but if you Google reclining office chair, does anything there look workable for you?

Worrysaboutalot · 30/10/2021 14:49

I am not sure what will work for me. This illness has only been over the last 18 months and I haven't worked over that time.

I have googled a few chairs but no idea what will work for me.

If you get the job, would it be a requirement for your employer to provide suitable seating for your disability?

Singinginshower · 30/10/2021 19:03

Also wonder if you have a disability centre near you where you could get an OT assessment who could advise?

Just had a quick google. Doesn't be anything other than the nice lady who community OT team lent me a perching stool and bath board. I will ring her and ask if they can advise me on an office chair. Though she did say they only dealt with basic needs, not sure if an office chair will fall under that remit.

Seem to be turning up a few options by searching for "office chairs with leg support" - are they not suitable?

TaraR2020 · 30/10/2021 19:49

www.ergohuman.net/

They're not cheap though!

Worrysaboutalot · 30/10/2021 20:26

Thanks TaraR2020. They look good and expensive!

I need to find somewhere local with office chairs, to give them a try.

Guess, I was hoping that someone would have a similar need to me and give me a personal recommendation. Bit of a long shot, I know.

Guess when I have need for one, I will buy a cheap one and work up from there.

You can have an assessment with an OT and they can advise you on equipment to help you one can be provided and some they can advise but you have to buy. They've been excellent in my experience.

RandomMess · 30/10/2021 20:40

Access to work would assess you and provide funding for something suitable.

You may find it easier to use a desk that works with your power chair if that gives you the support you need?

Worrysaboutalot · 30/10/2021 22:09

I won't get Access to Work help. I had to buy my own wheelchair, stair lift and outside wheelchair ramp. No one is going to help me with this.

Most of the places I am applying for work are too small to pay for things for me. I would be grateful enough if they actually gave me a job!

Plus ATW only pays a percentage and take weeks. So looking for a cheap chair to make desk work bearable, I will buy it once I find work. If I am super lucky, I will be able to work from home.

ATW pay if it's a small company, the company pay the first £1k if they have over x amount of employees.

It's completely different to the farce that is disability funding of wheelchairs etc.

Worrysaboutalot · 30/10/2021 22:26

I am applying to schools and charities, so no OT's etc.

"It's completely different to the farce that is disability funding of wheelchairs etc"

Oh, might be worth having a look at then.

Have you seen they sell specific leg rests designed to go with office chairs?
