Are there any Medical Secretaries working from home?

I am just about to start a Med Sec course with Pitmans either hoping to get a post in my local hospital or Gp Surgery but I’ve seen recently a few remote posts for medical secretaries.

Just wondering if you’re already in this post how do you find it? Is it easy to work remotely in this post?

Not exclusively WFH but for part of the week. There is too much admin that can't be done at home so we have to be in the office some of the time at least.

Thank you @tass1960.

So mainly typing up clinic notes/letters from home.

Can you tell me a bit about what your role entails? I have a basic idea but have heard medical secretaries do a lot more now.,
Thank you so much.

Med Sec here, I WFH half of my working week. There are some tasks I have to be in office for - clinic prep, blood results, notes and filing etc

I don't see how a medical secretary could WFH fully. I work part of the week at home. I have to be in the office to print letters, open and scan mail, sort out logistics for clinics. I can type, make/take phone calls and reply to emails from home but that would be it.

In my trust (or perhaps just my department) the band 2 audio typists or at a push band 3 support secretaries could but definitely not band 4 medical secretaries.

@josh can I ask if you have to supply your own equipment to WFH. PC, use your own phone etc?

@tass1960 I have to use my own laptop but work have provided me with a dedicated mobile phone. But as you say it’s impossible to do the whole job from home. I work a four day week so do 2 at home and 2 in the office which is about the right balance.

We supply our own laptops and have to use our own phones.. If we don't do this we can't WFH. I was speaking to my union rep recently about a different matter but WFH came up as part of that. She was horrified that we use our own equipment.

I think the majority of us think it is worth it not to have to go to the hospital for half the week

It makes sense wfh part of the week and rest of the time in the workplace.

I’m might just focus looking for a post at local GP surgery, hopefully with flexible hours. Or maybe if wfh, transcription work may be better suited.

Thanks for your replies.

I would think if they are advertising remote posts they have a way to make it work. Might be worth keeping it in mind.
