Compressed Working in Civil Service

I currently work 4 days a week in a large corporate multinational and am disillusioned with the whole concept. I would like to work in a more meaningful field that aims to contribute to more than just shareholder profit. I have been considering roles in the civil service and education setting but there is unsurprisingly a big pay cut involved. I could effectively be working 5 days for less than my current 4 day pay.
Is there any possibility of getting compressed hours on entering a role, ie keeping to 4 days but working longer hours and getting full pay. At least I would retain my much valued day off even with lower pay. Or is that reserved for longer term employees who have ‘proved themselves’?

I do compressed hours in CS (5 days over 4). I also have some members of my team on that or similar working patterns. PM me if you want to discuss that or departments.

@ShipwreckSunset

Any thoughts on MoJ or Home Offfice?
MOJ is going through transformation. It's a great time to join and help shape it. If you're not close to frontline operations then you should be able to work compressed hours. (If frontline then that can be hit and miss as they're short staffed and would prefer people manning the office as much as poss in their work time). Though in my view, someone on compressed hours is better than no one.

Home office likely to allow compressed depending on role. Home office also in period of transformation but not as significant as MOJ.

Both do directly contribute to meaningful work and both have strong routes of progression once in and proven

Thanks for the above comments, useful to hear from those working in the CS.

Re the location, the job posting on MOJ site says”
candidates will be appointed to their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office” - any ideas where I can find out where these are? Ie if they are only in major cities it is unlikely to be close enough for regular workplace, although fine if hybrid style working.

Is there not a contact email address on the job advert? I would ask them about locations

I don't work in the CS but have friends that do. From what they have said over the years, the standard number of working hours per week seems to vary by dept. One friend appears to have a standard week of 30 hours and therefore it's very easy to do compressed hours as, doing 4 days, it's only 7.5hrs and, even doing 3 days, it's only 8 - 6.30 if you only take 30 mins for lunchtime.
Another friend appears to have 32.5hrs a week as her standard week and another friend 35hrs. The one who did 32.5hrs had core hours of 10 - 2 which had to be worked each day (or, at least, each working day) but otherwise could do whatever hours she wanted.
