Not been contacted whilst off sick- have I lost my job?

NC'd for this.

I was signed off work on Monday for one week with stress. I'm not physically able to work right now but I couldn't get hold of the doctor yesterday to extend my sickline. Our rota runs from Sunday and I don't have set days, often work Sunday's, yet I've not been contacted with a rota or anything (they come out on Wednesday). I messaged my colleague asking if he had a copy and he read it and didn't reply. When I contacted my manager that I wasn't well, she didn't reply, only acknowledged my sickline when I sent it in. I am on a 3 month probation period, and my mum has convinced me that I've probably lost my job. I just thought they'd have been in contact, as they know I need to arrange childcare if I were to be working. All that aside, I really am not up to working right now, but my sickline ends tomorrow. What should I do?

The company may have policies that do not allow them to contact you while signed off sick.

Of course, during your probationary period you do have fewer employment rights,

Given that you are on probation the chances are that they aren't going to put themselves out for you by initiating contact themselves. You probably haven't formally lost the job yet - in that if you were fit and healthy and proactively trying to contact the managers to ask to be rota'd in, they would probably give you some shifts. But given that you are still not able to work there's not much point trying to establish whether they theoretically would give you shifts if you were theoretically available. Some people in your situation are able to bounce back with a week or two of proper rest and can get back into the fray. Others may be off for months and it would be unreasonable to expect them to keep an opportunity open for months for someone who hasn't even proven themselves in probation yet.

Until you have been in a job for 2 years you have very little in the way of employment rights.

I hope you get better soon. Flowers

Hi, I hope you’re starting to feel better. Is your absence relating to an underlying medical condition or disability at all?

They wouldn’t automatically bring your employment to an end but if you’re on probably or they have concerns re. Your attendance they may take this into account when considering your suitability for the role as part of your probation. X
