Job Opportunity - WWYD

I’m in a bit of a dilemma!

I currently work in quite a bespoke area of business as a senior advisor and do enjoy my job. I’ve been with the company for nearly 8 years and I currently work full-time hours compressed over 4 days. I’m on (what I thought) was good money at £41,000. Pros of the job:
• no micro-management
• flexibility to work from home
• I feel confident in doing my job

But I’ve got an opportunity to take a new in-house job which is paying £25,000 more than my role per year. However, it’s not ‘perfect’, in that:
• no wfh - commute of around 50 minutes each way
• no compressed hours
• employee reviews on indeed suggest it’s not as good environment to work
• worried about micro-management.

I know only I can decide, but WWYD? The money is obviously a lot better but I’m worried I will be more stressed, no time in the mornings to drop my DS at nursery etc.

Thanks Smile

£25k - how much of it would be left after tax and childcare costs? Worth doing the maths on that first.

Then work out whether your sanity is with that sum of money.... I am on £32k, having taken a drop of £12k to give me my brain back, and it's been worth every single lost penny!

I wouldn't unless the new job is a stepping stone to even greater things. If your work life balance is working and you're happy I wouldn't change it. As you say though, only you know what's best for you.

catfunk · 23/10/2021 13:12

I wouldn't if you aren't struggling for money.
Almost 10 hours commute a week - fuck that.
I would however ask for a salary review at your current company then look elsewhere if they say no

Tuliptulip · 23/10/2021 13:14

Could you use the offer of this new job to have a discussion about your current pay? As PPs have said, the difference after travel/childcare costs/tax won’t be as much as £25,000 so maybe they could meet you halfway?

RedskyThisNight · 23/10/2021 13:16

Do you need the money? Are there other potential better job opportunities?

The commute alone would put me off. I know that pre-Covid people would say it's "normal", but I think our view of "normal" should be challenged tbh.

RussianSpy101 · 23/10/2021 13:21

I personally wouldn’t, but I would be discussing your pay with your current employer.

OCM19 · 23/10/2021 13:22

Thank you all for your advice.

I have done the calculations for gross/net etc with pension contributions etc (childcare costs wouldn’t change), it’s about £1,300 additional per month.

In all honestly, no, we don’t need the money. We are comfortable but would like to move home in the next 5 years and obviously additional income would help.

I think you’re all right that while the commute may have been normal pre-COVID, it’s a big factor now. My current employer wouldn’t be able to increase my salary that much as we’re on set bandings in line with a company wide policy.

Thanks allSmile

@ThePlantsitter - yes it does provide a good stepping stone to become a partner, which is my ultimate career goal, so it is a good opportunity.
