No teaching jobs - alternative career?

I haven’t started my NQT/ECT. There are no primary teaching jobs in my town or surrounding towns. Not many in my county. I can’t afford to move to another county.

I’ve been shortlisted a few times, but always just miss out. I think it’s because ECTs require training, mentor, more PPA time… there’s not enough money in the budget.

I need a job (hate working on supply). If you’re a former teacher, what kind of job do you do now?

I would suggest taking TA work on supply, that's how I started as an NQT when there were no local jobs. Within a couple of days I was asked to cover a poorly teacher. I was offered a permanent full time job there within half a term.

We are wary of recruiting teachers that qualified this year as they have had so little teaching experience, due to Covid.

@fabulouslyglamorousferret currently doing interventions in a school. It’s only part time term time. I qualified in 2020.

Where on earth in the country are you?

There is a massive teacher shortage almost everywhere
How many supply agencies are you registered with? In 1 of the largest LAs in the country there was not a single primary teacher available on supply through any agency last Wednesday.

@YoungGiftedPlump not in my area of Greater Manchester.

You're looking at the complete wrong time of year. Feb/March onwards but before May half term is best.

There is not a shortage of primary school teachers @YoungGiftedPlump. They train far too many and they end up stuck on supply working for less than you’d get stacking shelves.

Very true. I wish I had known. Universities are just greedy.

I work all across England for schools, MATs and 4 LAs There is a chronic shortage of primary teachers at the moment in all of those areas covering at least 25 LAs

@YoungGiftedPlump where do you live? Which agencies are you with?

Have you thought about applying for roles in special schools? They often find it really hard to recruit but the work can be absolutely rewarding and brilliant. The most vulnerable kids need the best teaching and your primary pedagogy knowledge would be an asset to a secondary special school environment. It's very different, so you might need to volunteer or work as an LSA for a while to check whether it's for you but it is definitely worth it.
