Working on a different sight

Hi al,l any advice is appreciated.
I have been asked to work at a different sight for three mornings next week, as my location won't be open for my start time . They have known this for weeks and only told me yesterday. My contact does say all sights "needs of the company" to me this isn't a need it's short sighted management. Can anyone advise

Well I guess you have to do it if that's what your contract says.

Fetarabbit · 21/10/2021 07:53

If it says in your contract the expectation is you will work from different sites to suit the needs of the company, which it seems to, then yes they can. For whatever reason If they aren't opening your site early enough for your start time then its more reasonable their side to have you somewhere else then arrange someone to open and consider lone working etc. That said, does it cause major issues, is it a fair way away? Is the work flexible- could you suggest to your line manager that you start when the site opens (if you can)?

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 07:55

That's was my thought , it's annoying as it's nothing to do with the need of the business , it's my manager allowing holiday with no thought to how It affects me. He knew weeks ago. But it's too simple to ask me to change my hours for a few days

Has I of been told weeks ago yes I could of changed my hours , Ive made appointments now (dental) .

It classes as a reasonable request, so yes they can do it and it is the needs of the business. If they haven't been able to source someone to open the site you work at then asking you to change sites is acceptable.

However they should also accommodate the additional travel...does your contract give you exoenses for the additional travel? Hopefully if you have medical appointments they will allow you to leave early etc

tiggerwhocamefortea · 21/10/2021 08:07

It's only 3 mornings 🤷🏻‍♀️

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 08:07

No I don't get travel expenses, I did say I don't have the right car insurance, I'm only insured to go to a single place of work , he said never mind it's not far

Yes it's only three mornings , but he knew weeks ago and tells me yesterday

Presumably you were rostered for those days so should not have booked dentist during those hours, even if you thought it was at your usual location. How far apart are these sites?

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/10/2021 08:14

In terms of insurance, you would still be covered as you are only travelling to one place of work, just a different one to normal. That just means you aren’t covered to drive from office to office or out and about for work purposes.

I think your being a bit precious. You can’t change your hours to accommodate the site opening hours for this period, so you need to accommodate the change of site.

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 08:15

I booked my dentist out of working hours , to work on my sight I would start latter and finish latter , meaning I can't make the appointment.

OP posts:
LIZS · 21/10/2021 08:17

How much notice of hours do you normally get? Is it a case of being asked to amend or told this is what is required. Ie. Could you not have said "I can on Tuesday/Thursday but not Wednesday as already booked dentist"

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 08:25

I work fixed hours . It seems my manager being unable to ask me weeks ago constitutes needs of the business. I would of booked the dentist around the changed hours avoiding going to a different sight. Good news on the car insurance side

What’s the actual problem with going to the other site? Why don’t you want to do it?

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 08:46

I have no problems with the other sight , it's just the short notice.

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 08:52

If the contract doesn't say they have to give you notice, there's nothing you can do.

LIZS · 21/10/2021 08:54

Are your hours actually fixed or your usual shift pattern? Is it 0 hours?

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 08:58

Yes fixed hours , not 0h.nothing in my contact about notice times. I will just have to go .

Ilikewinter · 21/10/2021 09:01

How far away is the other location travel wise?

flowery · 21/10/2021 09:02

@Qwertykeys

I have no problems with the other sight , it's just the short notice.
But what problem does not being given more notice cause you?
Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 09:03

It's not far, think my problem is more my manager knew weeks ago.

OP posts:
LIZS · 21/10/2021 09:04

But they may have thought it was covered or demand would require less staffing.

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 09:06

No they new it wasn't covered, have done for weeks

Qwertykeys · 21/10/2021 09:28

Thanks for all your help. Just bumped into a senior manager, he's going to speak to my manager Smile as he can't understand why it's left so late to tell me. Told me to come in once the sight is open.

Unless there is a pattern of the management being difficult or treating you unfairly it does sound like you are making a mountain out of a molehill here. You manager probably forgot to ask you weeks ago because he didn't think it was going to be such a big deal. You sound like you are just making it a problem - I don't know what on earth kind of car insurance you have which only allows you to travel to one place of work and just move your dentist appointment. Unless the other site is a considerable distance from your usual place of work I really don't know why you needed to know more than a week in advance.
