Redundancy- options??

I'm shortly to be formally be put at risk - my role will cease to exist. It is a well paid professional role and redundancy package is available (don't know details yet)

There are a couple of vacancies which I'm looking at with my employer and I'm being encouraged to apply though both will mean substantial travel (including time away from home ) at my cost

I'm was initially feeling positive about the "opportunities" but the more I look at costs and impacts on family and juggling (I'm a single parent) the more worried I am.

If I apply for these roles and am fortunate enough to be offered one what if the pay will leave me much worse off?

If I turn it down then have I lost the opportunity for redundancy?

Trying to stay positive but really worried about family and finances

Some employers offer a trial period for these situations where you can try the new role and then opt for redundancy if you feel it's not working out within the first 3 months. It's not a requirement to offer this, but it's worth asking about.

Some employers offer a trial period

Employers are required to offer a trial period of 4 weeks, which can be extended if, for example, you need training. If you tell your employer the new role is not suitable before the trial period ends, you will still be entitled to redundancy pay.

Thank you - is this the case if I chose to apply rather than them just moving me to another job- this the position I'm in

If they are offering these jobs as suitable alternatives they must give you a trial period.

Thanks - they aren't offering the jobs I have to apply and go through competitive process - in theory they are promotion

Wot you get three months paid notice for any redundancy anyway? I would be inclined to take the redundancy and use the time to apply for new jobs, you should be covered until the end of February.

Perhaps if you disclose your position the MN readers will be able to confirm how many roles there are around in the industry.

If you accept one of the other positions and it does not work out you should still be eligible for redundancy within a defined period. Any alternative role offered should be substantially the same level, grade and responsibility. You can call ACAS for advice.

Sorry, why would you have to pay the costs of work travel? Unless you mean a huge commute?

lokijet · 26/10/2021 15:14

Hi it was huge commute - I live in North and 1 job is London the other Birmingham
