Salary Increase Business Case

Morning all,

I need to submit a business case requesting a salary review.
I really struggle with writing these kinds of things, I find it really hard to recognise my achievements and to big myself up.

My role isn't benchmarked as such so I'm also not sure how to qualify what I'm asking for.

If anyone has any tips, I would be so grateful.

I've been wanting to do it for about 4 months now. I know I need to JFDI but need some help!!

I have never had to do such a thing, but if I were I would investigate and cover things like:

  • external market rates
  • any internal comparisons or differentials if you have legitimate access to that information
  • tenure and salary increases to date
  • additional responsibilities (since last salary review)
  • any further upcoming increases in responsibility.

To be honest, I would focus less on achievements (I am not saying ignore them) but I would focus more on current and future value.

What are you regularly doing over and above your current role?

Have you benchmarked your role against your industry ie my role my area google search

glasshalfsomething · 26/10/2021 20:29

Have you directly impacted the business objectives? Increased revenue or customer satisfaction scores? Any other numbers? If so, it’s the best place to start as it demonstrates your value.

Just raise it with your manager. Doesn't need to be a massive business case. If they say no then look for another job and move.

TractorAndHeadphones · 27/10/2021 19:16

Why do you need a business case? Is it company policy? Or has you managed requested one to justify a raise?
What is your company policy regarding raises - are you close to budgets?

Thanks all! I stopped procrastinating and have sent it off!

I'll wait & see.

Never heard of writing a business case for a salary increase before. A business case outlines how an action/project/change/etc. is expected to benefit the business. Are they asking you to write up how YOU benefit the business (what you bring to the table etc.?) If so, fair enough, but that's not a business case.

inflatableseahorses · 27/10/2021 21:47

Why do you think it is justified?
What are you doing above & beyond what you were hired to do?
What new business have you brought it?
Do you consider that you are underpaid compared to your peers?
Crucially, what are you going to do if your manager says no? Stay or leave? If you stay, how will that work?

nancybotwinbloom · 28/10/2021 22:05

Good luck let us know how you get on

StrawberryFizz26 · 13/12/2021 16:43

I did it, I got a 20% rise, over 6 months with objectives to meet. Which are really interesting and gives me much more focus too.

Well done! What did you include in it in the end?

KatherineJaneway · 14/12/2021 06:07

Well done Flowers

Tomatalillo · 14/12/2021 06:22

Well done! I remember your thread. So glad to hear you got it 👍🥳

StrawberryFizz26 · 14/12/2021 08:13

Thanks Everyone Smile

I asked for a formal review after x years at the company & x years experience in the industry.
Then I documented a number of key achievements vs savings I've made the business.

HR did a formal bench marking and agreed with my request! I'm already signed up to a course in January and it's nice to know all my hard work has been recognised.
