Take new job or stay??

I just cant make a decision and stick to it!.
Ive been with current employer for 20 years, in current role for 5 and im bored, can do the job with my eyes shut. Its retail and im a team manager, already stepped down from store mgr with no desire to go back.
Ive been offered a team manager supervisor role in HMRC (call centre) was over the moon, feel quite proud of myself, £5k payrise, CS benefits but the shifts will be finishing later than current role and adding approx 30 min to daily commute.
I haven't handed notice in yet as waiting for employment checks to be done but spoke to my manager to give him a heads up, now bugger me the Regional manager has salary matched the HMRC role.
Im gobsmacked, never heard anyone offered this before and whilst its very flattering (almost feel embarrassed) I now dont know what to do!.
Stay in nice comfy boring safe job or start again, have to pass probation, prove myself and be a little fish in a big pond.??

oh what a decision.
you could get the extra money without the extra journey?

can you ask for something extra to get your teeth into?
how is job security? pension?

dgirluk · 20/10/2021 08:11

If you stay where you are, what are the options to change your role in the future?

If you're bored now just think how bored you'll be in another year or so's time......... I changed job a few years ago, with a pay cut, to a more challenging role, because I was so bored and frustrated. I haven't regretted it!

onelittlefrog · 20/10/2021 08:41

So, was your reason for going for the HMRC job to get a pay increase, or to get a new challenge?

If the former then you should stay where you are, because you've got your pay increase.

If the latter, then move on.

CocaColaTruck1 · 20/10/2021 08:43

Very tempting but I think it depends how bored you actually are.
Are you bored enough that 5k won't make a difference to your daily role?
Can you ask to take on some extra duties?

So...job security is good, i went through redundancy last year.
CS pension is miles better but I get more holiday entitlement.
Options to move are slim, i dont want to be Store manager (already done that) and due to restructure field roles have gone. But it might change in the future, guess hats the unknown.
Reason for applying for HMRC role was because I was looking for the opportunites long term, not that it was my dream job, a foot in the door I guess. Plus I feel undervalued in my current role, its been a tough couple of years and ive took on a lot that I shouldnt and thought nobody cared, but to be offered this pay rise obviously it is noticed!
So now i feel like im being paid an appropriate salary to reflect the job and experience i have, this is why im struggling to go.

An extra £5k of salary is not going to increase your job satisfaction or relieve boredom. It is what they call a hygiene factor as being paid too little can be demotivating, but being paid more is not motivating.

On the one hand it is flattering to be offered an increase, but on the other hand, is it really that flattering that they were happy to pay as little as they can get away with because they thought you were going nowhere?

To me it sounds like you were ready for a change, I’d take the new job if I were you.

Ilikewinter · 20/10/2021 10:17

Thats true, ive already said to DH thats its a peetake what they paid me and i just accepted it, but thats my fault I guess!.

Ive emailed them today because all recruitment was done online I don't actually know what a working pattern looks like, it could be working 6 weeks of lates for all I know..that would affect my decision.
It would be nice to actually have bank holidays off for a change, especially Christmas 🎅

They still don't care. But if you leave it will inconvenience them and cost them to replace you. If they cared, they would have given you a pay rise BEFORE you threatened to leave. Please don't fall for this bs.

The new role sounds like it could open a lot more doors for you in the future. A friend of mine worked at HMRC in a similar role for 10 years and was very happy (she only left because she was emigrating due to her husband's job).

After 20 years, I'm sure you're scared to make the move. But if you don't, I think you will look back and regret not moving.

workoholic · 21/10/2021 22:55

Going to guess you was paid under market rate as they thought you wasn't a risk of leaving. Maybe compare the pension schemes, bonuses, benefits in general and the work life balance? ....or you could say, you want more. If they are willing to match then see how far you can push it? lol

workoholic · 21/10/2021 22:56

....or say those things you wish you could have. Compromise you'll have Xmas off? If you left they wouldn't have anyone so....
