Reason for leaving last job..

blublub · 19/10/2021 12:17

I left my last job due to being in an abusive and violent relationship at the time and him pressing me to give up work. I am now, a few years later, looking to get another job having left this relationship, but have no idea what to write on my cv as reason for leaving my last job!
Anyone any ideas?

I always use the line “I got everything I could from the role and was ready to move on”

Best wishes in finding something new

The above suggestion is really good. Anything neutral along the lines of seeking new challenges, moving to a new stage in your career etc. is fine. A new employer won't really care as long as you weren't sacked for misconduct or poor performance and don't rant about hating your last job.

Best of luck in your job search.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.
It was a managerial role I left and I haven’t worked since due to being homeless, mental health etc. because of leaving this relationship, along with caring for the kids. So I have a gap of four years since my last job. It’s so much to try and explain in one sentence and I really want to get it right.

I would cover it with "caring responsibilities"

AlexaShutUp · 19/10/2021 13:22

I would just say "personal/family circumstances" and leave it at that.

I'd put "to address personal circumstances which are now resolved". This assures the employer theres no outstanding issues that coukd arise

That's good.

Do you need to write anything? I personally have never written reasons for leaving jobs on my CV & have worked most of my career in recruitment/HR.

I always have and something I thought was standard practice. I may ask other people I know now you’ve said that!
For family reasons maybe best and I could follow up in interview that they are resolved and I am therefore looking for employment. Many thanks.
